Who and why established the 58" as the standard cue length?

most likely because when the standard was established tables were 5x10 or 60" x 120" and a 58" cue is just about 1/2 that length and the same width to reach almost all the shots without a rest. <<<pure guess

next>>>>jump cues.....awsome, or lame as hell?

Jump cues are awsome when your shooting and lame when your sitting.

Does a smokey room bother you when you play?

Yes, but only if I think about it....

Is there such a thing as luck? And, if you answer yes, then tell me why some people have it and some don't.
(p.s. If you answer "no" you are lying to yourself and the rest of the board...)

There is no such thing as luck, using the law of large numbers. There is only consequence: as relates to pool, it can be positive, negative or neither resulting from a shot.

Is the Earth smoother than a billiard ball, when you account for their size difference?

It is:
http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/badastronomy/2008/09/08/ten-things-you-dont-know-about-the-earth/
According to the World Pool-Billiard Association, a pool ball is 2.25 inches in diameter, and has a tolerance of +/- 0.005 inches. In other words, it must have no pits or bumps more than 0.005 inches in height. That’s pretty smooth. The ratio of the size of an allowable bump to the size of the ball is 0.005/2.25 = about 0.002.

The Earth has a diameter of about 12,735 kilometers (on average, see below for more on this). Using the smoothness ratio from above, the Earth would be an acceptable pool ball if it had no bumps (mountains) or pits (trenches) more than 12,735 km x 0.00222 = about 28 km in size.

The highest point on Earth is the top of Mt. Everest, at 8.85 km. The deepest point on Earth is the Marianas Trench, at about 11 km deep.

Hey, those are within the tolerances! So for once, an urban legend is correct. If you shrank the Earth down to the size of a billiard ball, it would be smoother.

Does anyone care?

I would guess that it is. I do know that it's easier to follow with the Earth than it is to draw with it.

Question: Will playing with a flatter tip make it harder to miscue on a draw shot since you will hit higher up on the cue ball?

Yes, I've seen the math on this.
A pool ball has to be within five/one thousandths of round to be world legal.
The Earth is rounder than that

In these days of fantastic high-tech materials...does playing with an
ivory ferrule make you a bone-head?:D

Nostalgic maybe, bonehead, no.

Is Dippy Dave a world-class hustler or a giant fish?

I dont know Dave so I would guess that he is somewhere in the middle.

Question: Who is the most OVERRATED cue maker?
Didn't somebody already ask that?

Would you believe me if I said I am trying my best to become a horse? On the 30th of April, I am traveling to the wide open fields of Montana to hopefully learn from the best horses. Being a horse means a lot to me. I've just started my training. I have just nailed horseshoes to my feet (really hurts) and shaved my head into a horse mane. It would mean the world to me if you supported me by caring and it would help me complete my ambition. Thanks!?

If you're like most pool players that gamble, the transition should be
no problem....you've been on the 'stall' all your life.

How come I know how heavy my cue is by ounces, how long it is by
inches, but I know how wide it is by millimeters?

Somebody asked it, but it never got answered, because 2 people answered the question before it instead.

No. The topographical features of Earth would still be noticable if it were the size of a cue ball. Plus, the gravitational forces of the moon would cause it to be slightly asymmetrical, as well.

Using the law of statistical probability, explain why some people have more good fortune than others of equal ability.

See attached answer....

Why is it that a lot of pool halls do such a poor job with maintenance on their pool tables when it seems such minor things can be done to keep them in decent shape?

Probably because tips came from France which has long been on the metric system. It was probably easier to make cues fit the tips rather than decide on a standard fraction of an inch to make the ferrules into. Also it's easier to express width in terms of millimeters when dealing with less than an inch.

Good question though and I hope someone has a better answer.

Why will people spend up to $50 to buy a tip and have it installed but then complain about getting 3 or more days of world class pool for less money?

Because they can show someone the tip they bought but can't show the stream they paid for and how can you brag about that?

Why will people drop $2000 for a cue but complain about $125 for a lesson?

Similar to the reasons for the tip/stream scenario. The cue is tangible, the lessons are not.
And it's a status thing...

Why are there players that have to lie to try and win ? As in, "I hit my ball first" when it's obvious they did not, or "The cueball ball touched the rail" when it's clear that NO ball touched a rail ?

because they are ready to pay for what they can hold in hand more than what something not material.

This thread is supposed to end when a question is asked that could not have an answer. Which is that?

EDIT: to keep this right we should type faster, or with such competition chances are a question gets three or more replies at once :)
