warped cue?

Hi guys. I traded for a que recently and it had a slight roll to it. When I rolled it seperately the butt appears to roll perfect and the shaft lifted in the middle. So I put another shaft on the cue and it still rolls bad. Thus telling me their is something wrong with the butt. I've rolled it 50 times on 50 tables in front of 50 different people and no one can notice a roll in the butt. Could it be the pin or the face of the butt be at a bad angle? Thanks for the input.

That would be awesome if that's all it is. The cue has a couple of white rings aswell. I am not sure if they are ivory butt you can feel them a when you run your hand on the cue. The maker swears the cue has been exposed to extreme hot and cold and caused the to expand and shrink. I think I own a crap cue. I like the hit and love the look. Just wish i could get the wiggle fixed.

sound like a reface job. first thing id do atleast. sometimes changes of climates do funny things.

rolling the cue on a table and spinning it in a lathe are two COMPLETELY different things.

put the cue together. put the butt end of the cue in the middle of the wrap up on the rail and the tip in the playing surface. roll the cue and look at the joint. see if it bobbles up and down.

if it doesnt bother you and you like the cue dont worry about it. as long as the tip doesnt lift off the table it wont effect the shot

It definitely sounds like it's a problem with the joint area of the butt. Could need refaced? Maybe the pin itself is a tad off as far as centered or a slight off-angle from true center?

Thanks guys. Any idea what I can expect to pay for a refacing or getting the pin replaced?

This price can vary as each mechanic's price will reflect their shop expenses and the amount of time needed to accomplish. I charge 5.00 for each piece needing faced. By this I mean that I put butt of cue in lathe and make a slight pass to true up joint on a one shaft cue. If this doesn't true the shaft to butt I then make a thin pass on the shaft. On a cue that has two shafts then it is usually much easier to determine which is out, one shaft or one butt.

I charge 25.00 up to change a bent pin.

very reasonable!!

My name is Jon Spitz and I made this cue. Mr. Dirks had contacted me regarding these issues about 1 week ago. His e-mail to me was titled Custom Cue? Regardless of the sarcastic comment, I explained to him that there was probably a pin or facing issue with the cue. I also told him that I would look at the cue, but I would not repair it for free. I feel that Mr. Dirks comment is way out of line (I think I own a crap cue). Just my 2 cents.

Im sure that dirks was just frustrated because it is definitely hard sometimes to pinpoint an issue like this especially when butt and shaft rolls straigth separate but has rollout when together. He did say that he liked way it hit and looked. But i dont understand why you would not resurface the joint and shaft and replace pin at no charge as long as he pays shipping charges.

Hi Jon,
I am not a cuemaker and I don't pretend to be an expert on cue building and cue repair. I can understand climate conditions causing rings to pop, but if the problem lies in the joint or the pin, I would think that a cue maker would want to stand behind his work and fix the problem at no cost. (Just my opinion)

That being said, I happen to know Mr. Dirks personally and he is a stand up guy! I'm sure any sarcastic remark that he might have made was due strictly to frustration.

Two things:

First:
Mike, he did say he traded for this cue.
As a cue maker I've had the unfortunate pleasure of making cues for animals. I've had customers throw a new cue in the trunk of their car immediately upon receiving them from me, no case no nothing, just literally THROWN in the trunk. I've seen other customers throw cues around the room after missing a shot.
Clearly abuse!
You trade for a second hand cue you get a second hand cue. Not all problems that a cue might exhibit are the result of the makers attention or lack of attention to detail.
That being said if it was one of my cues I would want handle any repairs that might need to be done.

TWO:
Mr. Spitz

I agree with you 100% Paul. I was refering only to workmanship for the "no charge repairs". If there was abuse involved, then obviously any kind of warranty work would be thrown out the window and charging for the repairs would be expected, but if indeed there was abuse involved such as you describe, one would think that there would be visable signs of external damage such as finish issues, dings, chips in finish, or that sort of thing, none of which was mentioned by Mr. Dirks. Like I said, I know Dirks personally, we live in the same town and he is one of the good guys. I don't think he is trying to get over on anybody here and get something for free, he just wants the issue resolved.

Thanks Mike I thank you for the kind words. Yes I took the cue in on trade so I can't argue anything that may have happened when I didn't own the cue. I wasn't trying to start a war with anyone or put anyone down. If I buy a southwest cue and someone cut it in half with a hatchet I would say it's a crap. I appologize if it came off differently. I did send an email to Jon and in the subject I put cutsom cue? Only because I had a question about his custom cue. If that's what he says is sarcastic then I am sorry. I don't know how a person could read that but none the less. I never mentioned who made the cue. I really regret starting this thread. I will chalk this one up as a lesson learned and I hope that no one holds any grudges.

Dirks,

I have owned many Spitz cues, and he is a great cuemaker to deal with, I am sure if you get John the cue he will do a very nice repair at a reasonable cost, but until he sees the cue, none of us can be quite sure what it is.

Set something up with John, Im sure you two can work it out.

When you took the cue in trade you probably gave the trader appropriate value for a warped cue - since you sound like you are a business man. Now that you've acquired a warped cue for probably next to no cost, you may be trying to subtly badger the cuemaker into renewing it for you for free - and enriching youself unjustly? That is how it may look to some.

Dude, No, I don't even know Dirks. But, I do know what I'd think if I were a cuemaker and received an an Email titled "Custom Cue?" How would you interpret that question mark, Dude?

not a cuemaker...but if I got a email titled that way I'd read it like this "custom cue question"

which isn't sarcastic. Now if the text of the email was obviously being sarcastic that would be different.

Cubswin, I respect your opinion, but look at post #3, where, after expressing the views of the cuemaker, Dirks says he thinks he owns a crap cue. More badgering, IMO. I've recently seen two people purposely purchase damaged cues because they figured they could them fixed for free, like this, perhaps - and each succeeded. Remember, Dirks willfully traded for his "crap cue" - seems to me he'd humbly be seeking assistance rather than alienating the cuemaker.
