tip replacement

I`ve seen some good youtube clips on this method.
My question is after the tip has been glued to the ferrule,
what is the liquid used to softing the (tip edge) for cutting it down to size?
Some have said ''good old fashion spit'' but I thought there might be
something else used instead. Any answers are greatly appreciated.

Thanks Jeff

All I can add is to avoid chemicals unless you know what will happen when it comes to layered tips because there are several that will kill the glue holding the tip together and turn your 20 dollar Moori into several thin scraps of leather.

I moisten the edge with water. It keeps the cut cooler and smoother, thus avoiding pulling the tip apart or in the case of layered tips, avoiding delamination.

Thanks ragbug74
Thats what I thought but needed to hear it from someone else.

Water works for Me too, and should cut, evaporate, or burnish out by the time you finish the tip job. Just dampen the tip though, It don't take much, I wouldn't soak It or anything like that. One quick hit with a wet paper towel that's rung out very well is all It takes for Me.

There's also only a few type of tips I would even bother with doing that. Sniper is one, because It does a great job with those, triangle is another, but It depends on how sharp My stock of razor blades are at the time. I usually don't moisten the tip unless I feel It's absolutely necessary.Even with using the water, dull blades can roll the leather instead of cutting clean.

Thanks Greg for the advise, I`ll keep that in mind.
I`ll probably only use Triangle tips for the most part,
maybe some Elk masters if customers want them.
Thanks again
Jeff
