Because the speed of the cue ball is not what gets the object ball to the pocket, rather the spin on the CB is what gets the OB to the pocket. If the CB is hit too hard, there won't be enough spin on the CB to change directions into the OB. Try practicing the shot.

It is if you want to move the 8 ball as far as possible and the CB as little as possible. Hitting low slows the CB down but not the sidespin so the cue ball takes a more extreme angle off the rail, giving the 8 ball more speed toward the pocket while keeping the CB from going too fast uptable (and potentially back downtable) for the two-way safety.

I don't really like this shot (neither the shot or the safety is very high percentage) but I don't see a much better alternative.

I think the CB needs some Directional speed to move any OB. Side spin (Rotational speed) is not always Directional speed. Of course if the CB is moving off the rail, it has Directional speed, and in this case some Rotational speed also. If the CB had pure Rotational speed it would not be moving in a direction......SPF=randyg

Personally, I think that knowing the physics of the situation at hand might shark me. And I think I can execute the shot chosen as well as anyone.

As can most good players. It's a shot I have in my own tool box. Knowing the Physics dosen't make the shot.To make the shot one does not have to understand the Physics of the shot.

I made this shot on a 7ft Diamond Smart table with Simonis 860. To me, it doesnt matter what the physics behind it is. I seen this shot made before by some top amatuers in my area and Ive practiced this shot several times before but have never made it until that day in league. The 8 was 1/8 inch off the rail and I could barely see the 8 because of the 14. I shot it with extreme left english aiming to barely miss the 8. The cueball hit the rail first and on the rebound, it clip the 8 and the 8 rolled with pocket speed into the pocket I called.

When I looked at this shot, I know the percentage on making the 8 was extremely low. It was a 2-way shot in my eyes, if I made it, its a bonus, if not the cueball will be on the opposite endrail leaving a tough bank for my opponent. I also knew my opponent was not good at banking. I considered all these factors before executing the shot.

If you don't make it the 8 will be closer to the pocket (and maybe away from the rail) and your opponent will probably have an easier shot than you did. But I don't think you have lots of choices.

I disagree. Knowing the physics (for instance, that low sidespin gives more sideways velocity off the rail and can help slow the CB's speed for the safety) can mean the difference between making it and/or getting safe vs. leaving a better shot for your opponent. You don't have to know the physics to succeed with this shot, but you're more likely to know how best to shoot it if you do.
