changing the weight on a Dominiak WD1010?

I am trying to make my Dom heavier. I unscrewed the butt, and I exposed the weight bolt. However, the bolts I have are for a lucasi, and the diameter is too big for the Dom. Where can I order bolts from to fit the cue? I emailed William Dom. , but he hasn't responded? I am also new at this custome cue thing, so i'm not sure if I can accuratley measure the diameter of the bolt.

TRy calling him approx 6 - 7pm est time and he is usually there - btw - what does the cue weigh now ??
 
thanks for the heads up, i'll give him a call on tuesday. The cue is approx. 18.3 oz. I want it to be between 19 oz- 19.5 oz

Bill Dominiak uses a flat-head 3/8-16 weight bolt (i.e., 3/8" in outer diameter and 16 threads per inch). They are drilled and tapped for an allen-head screw that holds the rubber bumper on. Here's a source:


You want to increase the cue's weight from the current 18.3 oz. to something in the range of 19.0-19.5 oz. If your current weight bolt is steel, you can replace it with a longer steel bolt. Each increase of 1" in the length of the bolt will increase the weight by about 0.4 oz. For example, if you currently have a 3" bolt, a 5" bolt would take the weight to about 19.1 oz. You will need to measure the depth of the hole to make sure it is deep enough to accept the longer bolt.

If your current bolt is aluminum, weigh it and replace it with a steel bolt that adds the appropriate amount of weight. For example, if you have a 3" aluminum bolt that weights about 0.4 oz., you could replace it with a 3" steel bolt that weights about 1.2 oz. or a 4" steel bolt that weights about 1.6 oz.

By the way, if you want to "fine tune" the cue's weight to something heavier than a particular bolt produces but lighter than the next-longer bolt length produces, you can shorten the longer bolt a bit by cutting it with a hack saw. (Smooth the ragged cut edge of the bolt with sandpaper or a file to avoid injury.)
 
i weighed the bolt that is in it now, it is 1.2 oz. So, i guess that is a 3". I might try to see if a 4" or 5" bolt fits to make it 0.4 - 0.8 oz heavier.

Yes. A 3" bolt at 1.2 oz. is steel. So a 5" steel bolt should put you in the weight range you want. It will shift the balance point backward slightly, so you'll have to try it to see whether that feels all right to you.
 
Well, I emailed Bill, and he told me that he drills holes up to 6" deep. I bought a 5" and 6" flat-head 3/8-16 weight bolt.

I tried screwing the bolts in, but I can get only about 4" in. So, when I screw the 5" bolt, 1" sticks out. I like the weight of that bolt though.

Is there a bumper that covers the part of the screw that sticks out? Or should I force the bolt in? I'm afraid of actually cracking the wood if I force it in.

Bill also said in the email that I can switch to a brass bolt. How much weight does that add, and where can I find it?

I'm not aware of a bumper that would cover a bolt sticking out 1". And I wouldn't force anything. See comments in your other thread: http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=156902

By far the easiest way is to just go to a local mechanic and have him drill and tap the hole a little deeper and then add either a longer weight bolt or you can use the weight bolt that came with the cue and put the number of 3/8-16 set screws in front of the weight bolt to bring the final weight to what you desire.

Although brass may be a bit heavier, I don't think you can make up the difference that way. Do as Dick mentioned and use a deep hole 5/16 drill and a long 3-8/16 tap to make the hole deeper.
Should be a very easy fix for someone that has the right tools.
Maybe it's just me but I can't believe you want to add close to 2 oz at the back end.

Well since the cue already has a 3" bolt. I want to add a 5" bolt instead. So I want to add 0.8oz. I want the weight to change from 8.3oz to 9.1 oz. I will send it back to the cuemaker, he will drill and tap the hole deeper.
