I have a Universal Smart Shaft on a butt from a $30 cue. Would it be cheaper or even feasible to buy a better butt by itself? Is the quality of the butt even significant as long as the shaft & tip are good?

On a more serious note.....

I figured I owed you a serious answer after the last post.

IMHO, the "quality" of the butt can very definitely make a significant difference in the overall "feel" of the cue.

You "could" order just a butt from any of the cuemakers on this forum (including myself), but I question whether it would be the "best" option. It's a buyer's market for cues these days. I'd look for a complete cue with the same joint type/size as your current shaft. That way you not only have a "better" butt....you have an extra shaft too. There are some real deals right now....just browse through the "Wanted / For Sale" section.

With that said, what pin size(type) and joint diameter are you looking for?

Most cuemakers wont make a cue without atleast one shaft. That will cha nge from maker to maker. Personally my prices have one shaft built in. Often they will match up a shaft like 314 to ob1. So you can buy a butt with shaft and just put the univ on your cue.

As far as cost. If you but a 200$ joss or say a 2000$ mottey with equal specs there wont be much difference in play as long as both cues are made properly.

I have built butts through the years to match Predator and Schuler Shafts. I have also modified some shafts to fit my cues.

I have built butts to match Predator and Schuler shafts before. I have also modified shafts to fit my standard cue butts.
