Question On Unique Products Stuff

People:
I have a cuebuilding student coming to my shop from Turkey to spend a few weeks learn the art. He is interested in perhaps buying some machines from Brian swank and Unique Products and I do not know how to advise him on this as I am not familiar with these machines.
Anybody with any experience using these machines or working with this company that has anything to say, I would greatly appreciate hearing it.

Sir, just to let you know. You are one of those people on my list I would greatly like to meet.
That being said. Unique Products have always been easy for me to deal with. I would in this case suggest that you talk with them and ask them to send you some videos on dvd that show each of their machines in use. These videos show quite alot on how each is used and what they can do. Their machines seem to be dedicated to one or two task only so one that does all is not possible. It sounds like to me that your friend is looking at shipping back equipment that is not easy to find over there.

FWIW, I know that I cannot ship network equipment (Cisco and the like) into Turkey - it will get confiscated by customs - they are VERY protective of their own vendors. At least that is the story I'm told.

I would have to think something as technical as a cue lathe might fall under the same constraint. They may or may not be aware of the import restrictions - they should inquire first.

How many vendors in Turkey are making cue building lathes?

Dieckman......call Unique and talk to them....Bryan or Jim either can give you any info you need for your student.
 
I have a Unique Taper Shaper and it is by far far one of the best start up machines ever. I started building cues four months ago and I have already got my shaft building dialed in plus cutting down forearms and doing simple point work.
Taper shaper can do these things and probably more.
Shaft tapering
Butt tapering
Ring Billets
Cut V points

This has really helped me out in understanding and getting my feet wet initially with one machine instead of 4 or 5. I only have the Unique Taper Shaper and a High tower deluxe lathe. With these two machines I can build a whole cue with nice points. I am limited from doing inlays but I can live with out until I get into a CNC.

If he ends up buying a Taper Shaper I highly recommend he upgrades the router to their Variable Speed Quite Router.

Greetings Mr. Dieckman
As I was working at my lathe today, something occurred to me.
Your student will be learning on metal working machine tools which you have in your shop. Though modified, they're still basically metal lathes.
Is there any logic in suggesting that your student might feel more comfortable back at home using machines similar to what he was taught on?
The customs issue becomes a mute point if he can acquire a suitable lathe on his side of the world.
I know nothing of the cue specific lathes other than what's said on this site. The general consensus is that both Hightower and Unigue put out quality machines. Sorry I can't be of more help.

As a side note, I thought I saw you at Seybert's a few weeks ago. I was delivering work that I had done for them and saw a guy in overalls at the front counter. As I was walking to the back-room I remarked to myself, "I'll bet that's Dieckman". I wasn't sure because I hadn't seen you in almost 20yrs. By the time Kory, the shipping guy confirmed my suspicion, you were out the door. I would have liked to say hello and thank you. I hope the opportunity presents itself again.
