LASER Straight in from say the 8 to the 9, and CAN'T CHEAT THE POCKET

if'n you draw back you will end up on top of the 9, most likely with no shot.

Ok, I know I didn't play perfect shape to get here, and I KNOW it won't come up that often, but here's something I tried on a whim yesterday, and learned a little something....

I spun the CB (in this case low right) so when it contacted the 9, it spun the 9 into the rail and they separated, instead of double kissing and coming back together.

Shoot it in the opposite corner, and go 4 rails to the 9. That's what Earl would do. I'd probably only hit 3 rails.
 
You turned out well...over the years I have learned this option(still don't do it enough though), safety first. A little top right, bank the 8 back to the center diamond on the foot rail and the cue ball will naturally go to the center diamond on the head rail...all in the speed...starts the safety/strategy battle...whoever gets loose in discipline first will generally lose the game.

This is a pretty standard tactic, and you don't need the sidespin. You'll only end up "stacked" if you happen to hit the OB at the precise angle for that, something that will happen maybe once in a hundred times. Just be sure to give it a little more speed than necessary to reach the OB.
