I posted this thread in the action room last week but it seems that there's hardly any response for pool related topics in there so I am reposting it here in hopes more pool enthusiasts can enjoy it.
Monday night, some Sandcastle “Knights” and I took a ride out to Queens to play in Master Billiards and support their weekly event. The eight of us didn’t place in the tournament but a few of us locked up in some light action that night.
Little Joey Landi from Sandcastle Billiards in Edison, NJ and Wellington “Parrot” from Masters Billiards in Queens, NY matched up on tight box table #6 in some friendly $100 sets of 9-Ball races to 9. The Parrot was victorious in the comfort of his own home that night. We all exchanged numbers and invited them down to NJ to play.
Tuesday night the Dominican crew from Masters returned the support by coming down and participating in our weekly tournament that very next night. Besides that, Parrot came down to lock up with Joey Landi once again. Thanks to Wellinton, Albert, Albi, Javier, and everyone for coming down to check out the spot. (Where’s Hondu???)
I’d like to thank everyone who came out to play in our Tuesday weekly event. Although it was only an average turnout for the tournament at 25 players, the night was FAR from being scarce of action…
While Joey Landi was still in the tournament, Parrot kept busy with a $100 set of 10-ball with Danny “Absolute” Cintron, another one of the Sandcastle’s players. It was a close set the whole way but Parrot won the hill-hill set. At this time, Joey had placed in the weekly tournament but got knocked out and was available for the man who came own to play him again. Little Joey and the Parrot locked horns once again. Little Joey, worn out from the tournament perhaps, did not play his best but the Parrot who was rested, played well and won that set 9-5 proving himself as a worthy opponent and making the trip down all worth while. It was late and everyone was tired so we agreed to play again another time. This only set the beginning for an action packed night to follow!
Wednesday night, the Masters players all returned with even more people and more heart to play. This time, Absolute Cintron and Parrot locked up some 10-Ball action in a race to 11 for $500. Danny C. won the first set 11-9. They ran it back again for another $500 and Danny Cintron was victorious once again this time 11-7. That was the end of that match-up.
In the center of the room, PR Albert from PJ’s Billiards in Linden, NJ was playing Javier in a friendly set of 9ball for $100 giving him the 7 out and winning that.
On another table, there was some fun action bet on pitching quarters to the spot, flipping multiple quarters one side, doing trick shots, playing Keno and so on and so on. Even I got involved and posed a $50 challenge to the Parrot to do my “impossible” back-cut spin shot. Prize goes to the first to successfully complete the task. I went first and hung it in the jaws on my very first attempt. Then Parrot and I, the Sandman, went back and forth till he made it beating me at my very own shot! We went at it again with him going first this time as I nailed the shot on my second attempt firing the ball in at a nice speed backwards along the rail. We left it at even between us and then showed and traded shots back and forth with one another for fun. YES! Just for fun. We were all delirious and giddy at this time in the middle of the night.
There were a couple other action matches going on at the same time as well that I’m not too sure about the particulars of to state here.
On the other side of the room, Wali Muhammad from Sandcastle, and Dominican Shorty were playing some one-pocket on the QUADRUPLE shimmed table #1 in the Sandcastle for $150 a rack. After battling it out all night long, Wali came out ahead a couple games over Shorty. They played from 9:00pm till 10:30am!!! Big-ups to these two warriors. They deserve props for their stamina alone! (I closed for business to the public at 2am and just reopened at 11am for business after a 20 minute nap on the couch in the Sandcastle. I love it! I’d love a gapper even more but hey, can’t get everything like the good old days! LOL)
I’d like to say how impressed I was with the quality of CLASS in the Dominican crew of perfect GENTLEMAN. They were very respectful and extra polite – a true pleasure to deal with! You are all welcome here anytime! It was a true pleasure having you guys here. We will play again! ( Where was Hondu???)
Next time bring Asif too! There's plenty of action for you too!
Thursday night was another good action night with Skyline Billiards of Brooklyn now wanting a piece of the action at Sandcastle. Three players; George Rodriguez, Marc Vidal “Spain”, and Greg came down to play. Rob Pole, owner of Skyline Billiards came down later on to support his players. I owe you a visit now Rob.
Originally slated to play were Al Lapena of Sandcastle vs. Spain of Skyline and Danny Cintron of Sandcastle vs. George Rodriguez of Skyline. What had worked out was that Spain played Little Joey giving him the 7-ball spot for $200 a set to 9, and George played Danny in 10-ball for $500 in a race to 11.
Little Joey came out 2 sets ahead after battling with the very well respected “Spain”.
George Rodriguez won the first set with Danny Cintron 11-8. They ran that same game back only this time Danny Cintron won exactly the same, 11-8. It was now too late and everyone was too worn out to play anymore sets.
Again, these guys were also perfect gentleman and a pleasure to compete against. It’s refreshing to know that we can lock up like good old times!!!
Friday, I worked a double from 11am till 2am on that 20 minute nap all for the love of the game!
There was some more "usual" action on Friday but I think you get the point.
Thank you all once again! I’m interested to hear what others have to say and how you feel about some good ‘ol tournament competition followed by finding an opponent to lock up with afterwards head to head!
