I think this is a problem of terminology. Billiard players use the term "scratch" to describe a legal billiard made in an untinentional way. In Jim's run the fourth billiard was a legal score, but he got a big fat kiss. Some house rules might disallow such billiards, but the official rules have no such sanction.

So Jim got lucky on the fourth shot and went on to score five more. Another term for a lucky billiard in some parts of the country is "dog", and the saying is, "It's not the dogs that get you, it's the puppies".
