What are cue points?

Hi. Reading about cue manufacture I see people often refers to "points" (cue with no points, 2 points, 4 or 8 points) but I've been unable to learn what those points are or why are they important. Anyone would mind to enlighten me on this? Thanks.:o

Don't let them kid you Art. Cue points are the actual number of points you acru when you participate in the AZBAPP (AZ Billiards Amatuer Pool Players) tournament held four times each year in various cities across the US and Canada. This year the cities are Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe, with the final tournament to be named later. Last year was a banner year for the AZBAPP with fourteen players signing up. This year, as many as seventeen to twenty-three are expected. I played year before last and finished first in my flight and won a t-shirt.

Actually if you look at the older catalogs for billiard supplies you will find the reference to cue points means the ferrules that the tip is mounted to. But today the points are the inlaid pointed pieces in the forearm area.

point me in the right direction

Thanks for all the good responses!

Even to Tramp, who is not the one to blame...

Thanks Art.
You know, sometimes I may appear brutish, or insincere, by telling all the half true stories that I do. Well allright, all the completely untrue stories that I do, but underneath this facade of frivolity beats the heart of a man on a mission.
Many years ago my Grandmother died and I was at her side. With her last bit of strength she looked up at me and said, "Son, you ain't nothin' but bad luck."
From that day on I vowed only to spread laughter and good cheer, mixed with a little bs, to my fellow man. Especially pool players.
Kinda gets you right here, don't it? :D

Another kind of point is the Sharpie marker variety. Found on cues from dubious seller in a attempt to even out the points.
