Magic Eraser is the bee's knees! I lightly damp one with rubbing alcohol (usually 70% or higher) and dry immediately afterward. I try to avoid any sandpaper except a Q-Wiz from time to time. This method works wonders!

Depends on whether you wax your shafts. I do, so my routine is this:

1) for very dirty or unwaxed shaft, Magic Erase dampened with 90% isopropyl alcohol, followed by 4000 grit Micro-mesh (piece of brown paper bag or dollar bill would probably work almost as good as the Micro-mesh)

2) When shaft has been cleaned, wax with high quality cue wax, high-percentage carnauba wax, or paste wax

3) To keep a waxed shaft clean, I use alcohol lightly sprayed onto a clean cotton cloth. If you don't get the cloth really damp with the alcohol, it seems to clean the shaft of oils and chalk without removing the wax.

one of the instructor guys on here recommended using a pumice based hand cleaner like the ones you get at autozone. Its a mild abrasive which cleans the shaft really well and supposedly there is lanolin in it which waxes and seals the thing. I use the silk-shaft cleaner (or something like that) and it is basically the same thing. Works very well for me.
