What about a single elim with a rebuy?
Rick Goulden is not allowed to play lol j/k.
What about a single elim with a rebuy?
This one would be in Windsor Heights. I like the format and I also like having it handicapped fairly. A lot of times a good fair handicapped tourney will make everyone feel like they have a chance to win. Maybe make handicaps consistant with a 5-5, 5-4, 5-3, and 5-3/breaks races. If you have two AA players they can race to 6 to settle it. The short races in of themselves provide a handicap of sorts. I have a better chance of beating someone better going to 5 than I do going to 9 is my point.
I definitely think lower handicaps are important for a sustainable tourney. I don't want "filler" though, I want these guys to be able to win.
I think there is potential here. With new businesses opening it would be very wise for Stix WH to establish a tourney on Saturdays to get people there before a competitor beats them to the punch.
Please dont turn Iowa into a handicapped pool world. If we want to make it fair for everyone lets just show up at any street corner and flip coins instead. Have I told you that I hate handicapped tournaments.
I plan on playing 9ball league on monday's. Thats if Rene gets enough teams. If not, we will play the 8ball monday league. Just something to get out of the house one night a week.
SOOOOOOO..... My thoughts on things that have transpired over the last few days.
JB, needs to work on his internet people skills. They are HORRIBLE! 98% of the negative things he types, I doubt he would ever say to someones face. For you Jon, let the hatred go. We get it, You don't like a few people. Use that energy for something positive.
Mikey F., good job on the calcutta. Great job of donating your own money trying to build up the pot. I agree that 1 or 2 Pick of the litter's would have decreased the overall pot. I do think that everyone should have had to buy themselves for a minimum, no bid pool.
Randy H., Hate to say this as I am sure you already know but being here only every OTHER weekend is not great for business. Especially one that requires interaction with your patrons that frequent the place more often than not. There's a few reasons our team plays out of Smokeys. 1) We always get service. 2)The owner interacts with everyone and knows 95% by name. 3) We always get service. Did I mention that there is alway someone there that is asking us if we need anything? I understand it is tough living out of town and finding the right someone to run the place is tough but for a nominal fee I will be that guy!
The tournament was ran decently for a first time.
People playing the same opponent twice in a tournament isn't that big of a deal. You went through a 64 person bracket before you maybe accidentally met the same person. Take it as a revenge match? In big tournaments don't the final 16 get reshuffled too including the one loss people?
Only time I personally saw a hicup was when Jody went to play his match and then Rob went to play his match and Paul wasn't around, I was standing there looking at the board and had 4-5 people walk up and ask me several questions about the brackets. I answered them and then people started to come up and tell ME who won/lost. So I fit in and helped out and assigned tables, found opponents, even skipping my own match until it was the last one that was left and there was only one open table. (WHERE'S MY COMPENSATION!?!?!?! just kidding, I like to help)
Next I know, the ordeal with the handicap came up with Brian Thompson and his opponent. I disagreed with the desicion that Jody and who ever else made to move him up MID match(let alone mid match DOWN 3-0!) Do I think he was a B? No. even asked him on the stream and he dodged the question but finally said" No, but thats not the point"
The shenanigans that happened afterward were uncalled for. I don't know the details but according to him, Brian threatened his life. I'm not sure if he provoked Brian or what was said but IMO that was a bit much.
As far as the other handicap issues, people are always going to complain especially pool players. It's second nature to them! As far as Randy wanting people moved up that he played, I am sure while playing someone, you would have the best judge of a persons ability. I don't know if what he witnessed was well merited or not. Just saying.(BTW I went 2 n out in that tournament. So am I a "D" or an "E" next time?)
Mike "alleggedly" carrying a concealed weapon? seriously? Even if he did, I would assume he has a concealed permit? And if he did, whats the big deal? TBO, if he did,I would be curious as to why he would need to carry but if he didn't tell me, I wouldn't feel offended.
Jenni, I understand the motherly instinct has set in and you are protecting and standing up for your family but the less you say, the better off you will be.
Gary, you sir, are one well rounded individual!
Jason R., you make me think sometimes. I hate thinking!
Spina, get your hand fixed, get your new cue, and get with your backer so you can give me the 7 out and the breaks so I can steal from you! Stop dodging me! j/k
Annonymous posters, pm me and tell me who you are and I will give you some cookies! I won't tell, I promise!
Btw, for those of you that don't know me..... I'M THAT "ME" GUY!
....................................................................................................
Wow, where do I start?...lol
First and fore most this is Brian Thompson (imtheone13@msn.com), I certainly don't want to be accused of not giving my name.![]()
Ok, here we go. Yes Jon Brown has a tendency to get carried away on his posts. Anyone who has ever logged into this site is well aware of that. We all know that there is an incredible amount of tension between him and Mike Athens. I for one, would like to see it just get squashed! All things considered, there are a lot more things in life to get worked up over! Let it go!
Not to pick on Jon Brown, but yes I do whole heartedly agree that Jon should have never been alowed to play as an open player on the winning team in Davenport! Especially when every open player in Des Moines, myself included, would not dare to play him even, for any sort of money that could be considered worthy of playing! That being said, would I have put him on my team as an open, probably! I'm calling everyone to the carpet including myself!
This, brings us to one of the original reasons the "I hate Athens bandwagon" has recently got launched once again. Reason being, several (if not most) people agree that he made a judgement call in Davenport that was self serving. Really? I also think that putting JB on any team as an open team is equally self serving! Once again, not saying I wouldn't have done it, as I do not want to even remotely absolve myself from doing the exact same thing! However, I also would not act completely dumb founded when called to the carpet on it.
Mikey, at first I was a little put off by the lack of blind picks, as I've never participated in a calcutta that didn't offer them. To my surprise, it actually worked out well and I do think that you managed to get more in the calcutta than would have been raised otherwise! Great Job!
I also feel a little guilty, as far as your self assesed status is concerned. I do consider you a friend. However I have not really gone out of my way to convince you of so. For those of you asking, should one really go out of their way, sure they should, when that person is a new comer to a town who virtually knew no one and has been fighting his way in from day one. Once again, I apologize and would love to go just hit some balls for fun some time.
As far as Randy is concerned, I was out before he made any decisions involving anyones handicap. That being said, Randy is a pretty good guy. Do I feel that the one of the owners should be there more, well..... This isn't exactly what Randy signed up for. There were supposed to be basically 4 partners, 3 basically silent and one hands on. A tragic motorcycle accident changed all that! Now Randy and/or Marc have to leave their families and other businesses to drive several hours to check on things here. Does it suck, yep! But he's willing to do it and I give him credit for that!
As far as the bracket goes, everyone agrees that there should have been a 128 man bracket there and I'm sure there will be one next time. I do not, nor will I ever think that Jody would do anything dishonest to rig the brackets. It's just not in his nature! He will play on the same table continuously at Beach Girls because "it's closer to the bracket board" ...lol but even when that was called into question he stopped. Jody and rob for, that matter are about as honest as they come.
Now to address me and my behavior, let me start by saying "YES" I did over react. However let me just correct the situation. My oppenent was listed as a "C" player, not a "B" and he was moved up to a "B" when it was 3-3. (he was already on the watch list from the previous match) He made a comment to me about my play and I countered back. It was 4-4 and it was his break when I went and offered my hand and apologized for any altercations, at which point he put his hand out and pulled it back about 4 inches from contact and snickered good luck. Was I upset, absolutely! Please take into consideration that had I have come to Kansas, Illinois, Minnesota or any other major tournament and snuck in as the worse ranking in the building and got caught doing so, I would absolutely expect to face the much deserved wrath of the locals. Does that excuse my actions? No, and for that I apologize to all involved!!!
As far as Mike carrying a concealed weapon is concerned, that's seems kind of silly! I'm not saying it is completely false as I have no proof, one way or the other. I'm just saying, Mike and I have had our agreements and disagreements over the years and I far more see him avoiding conflict as apposed to inviting it! Letting word get out that he was carrying a concealed weapon would only invite trouble and I don't see that as Mike's nature at all...... Btw, Mike if anyone literally threatens you with physical harm over an incident that took place nearly a month ago, their ignorance will speak louder than their actions! I know you and Whitey and a few others had words at the time and no long term friendships were forged over it, but if they hold on to it this long and still want to do something about it, thats stupid and I've got your back!!!!
Jenni, I ABSOLUTELY applaud you getting fed up and getting sick of the b.s. Anyone who knows you, would expect no different! Unlike others, who probably look at this as you standing up for Mike, I on the other hand, look at it as you being you! Mike is intreverted and more likely to to let things roll off his back. You on the other hand, are very opinionated and would rather face controversy as opposed to avoiding it! There is nothing wrong with either style. They are just different in there nature!
Gary, I too enjoy your comments and balancing words of wisdom! You have an incredible knack of keeping one foot in each world, all the while maintaing an awesome "Switzerland/Neutral" side to the subjects that allow you to get in and throw a few much needed jabs and get out unscathed. Brilliant as always and i would expect no less. Keep it up, as your posts are generally right on target!!!
Jason, I think that for the most part, you really do go out of the way to keep the peace! I also think you have a tendency to take things a little too personal as far as the anonymous posts go. Let it go brother. I've got enough known things to battle in life, let alone start battling the unknown! You are a very genuine person with a huge heart! I'm glad I've gotten to know you a little better over the past couple of years.
Spina, well there's not much I can say about you except, you're Spina and anyone who has anything negative to say about you, has to be mistaken!
Well, I guess I'm done making friends for the evening/morningI welcome any comments, both good and bad! Because I, like so many others have really started to lose my enjoyment for the game. A game in which I once loved and I am going to try and work to get it back. Sweet dreams!

I can do that!! Every time I drive by though, your truck isn't there....![]()
Seriously Jason, I can and will post on this thread as I see necessary.
If you haven't noticed already, the content of all my posts up until the last one has had nothing negative directed at you. If you don't want to man up and meet with Mike and I to discuss such issues, then DONT ask us.
YOU are the one who allegedly said my husband brought a weapon with him to Big Dogs. It's in my family's best interests to get on here and clear the air regarding your reckless comment.
I re-arranged my schedule last minute today so that we could all come to some sort of gentleman's agreement as suggested by Farley, and you cancel for the reasons stated. Are you going to tell everyone else who agreed with me that they should stop posting on here as well?
For the record~ I din't threaten you on my previous post and anyone who read it knew exactly what I meant. It's really sad that I have to get on here and go off on a verbal rocket to get people to see the situation for what it WAS.
Come on....What do you say....group hug anyone?
come on....what do you say....group hug anyone?
In other news I have your Hustlin' shirt Spimp juice.
And I thought "Tank Man" was an idiot
Bruce can you shrink the picture or remove it, I can not handle it!!!! I feel way too violated. I'd like to puke.
I do agree with you Troy. But how do you get people out to play ?
We had a BIG cheap tournament this past weekend and what about 40 people from dsm played ? There is a couple hundered capable players who could/should have been in it and weren't AND IT WAS HANDICAPPED. IMagine if it hadn't been, might be 5-10 less who played.
"Tank man" was no more an idiot than Rosa Parks. He knew what would happen and if it hadn't, many wouldnt understand the gravity of the situation.
The ones out and playing are the ones that will always be out and playing. For every one player that handicapping brings in, you might have one not show up. Add to that the whole handicapping system and how people use that to their advantage, and it perverts the game. We just as well APA rules. Slop counts and no ball in hand.
i wanna be in the middle.....
Please please please ! ! ! ! ! !
This was not about civil rights. This was about the Chinese government killing their own people. However there is a fundamental difference for me with Tank Man. He went to the store to get groceries, sees tanks rolling through the hood and stands in front of them and the tanks actually stop. He made a split second decision to not let the tanks through so they wouldn't go blow his people up. Ultimately he didn't sacrifice his life, he got out the way, and the tanks still went and blew stuff up. Only problem was it got caught on tape and that image became famous.
I look at it and see a man who had a moment of insanity that smartened up and got out of the way, once his image got caught they then smuggled him out of the country and he didn't fight for anything.
Compare that to Rosa who fought her whole life, Rosa was a bad woman. Tank Man just spazzed out and smartened up but was caught on tape. 2 seconds of fame type stuff.
