Can you shape a phenolic tip?????

I recently bought an old MG sledgehammer jump/break cue and I didn't immediately think to check but I just now realized its a dime diameter tip!!

I'm a young guy and maybe i don't know any better but I don't want a dime tip for breaking (miscues/unwanted english/consistency). I don't want to ruin the tip by trying if its a dumb idea.

i suppose there's no reason why i couldn't shape it into a nickel diameter? it would create a rougher surface which would hold chalk better. I need some help here though!

You may find that changing it isn't necessary. You are going to want to keep the tip closer to center when breaking with a phonelic. If you break on the edge of the safe area to put some kind of spin on the cue ball, you may want to stick with leather.

If you can "shape" a diamond you can shape anything. Take a file and flatten it out a bit them drop it into a nickle shaper and your done. You might lose 2mm of overall length.

Yes, you can shape a phenolic tip and it's easier to do on a lathe, but it can be done with a file or rough sand paper.
