Which players caused a shift in thinking or standards?

I think Corey probably had the most impact of any player.

in regard to the cut/soft break i think Ronnie Wiseman planted the seed in Corey's brain for this. They both along with Alex Pagulayan attended a tournament here in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan (yes, where the hell is that?) put on by the Northern Lights Casino, the tables we played on were Dufferins, regular aramith, no Simonis, old rails, and crooked. Needless to say Cory lost to a local, one complaint he had was that he was hammering the rack but making nothing, feeling very dejected after his loss, Ronnie quiped to him that you don't need to break so hard to make a ball, and showed him by racking a set of 9 balls up, and just punching the rack at a medium stroke..........

I know we would all, or mostly, agree that Efren changed how people look at kicking for accuracy and safety, as well as "touch".

Arguably SVB is now causing a shift to how the break is studied and executed, that was probably started with Cory.

What other players, or maybe arguements to the 2 above, have caused massive shifts of thinking for a majority or players? Like "we all did this before so and so came along and did it better".

Don't know this as fact but i think John McChesney was instrumental in making popular the use of Texas Express rules . Maybe C.J. Wiley or Randy G could weigh in on this .

I think that's probably correct, but hang-the-9 (the original poster) said: "Like 'we all did this before so and so came along and did it better'." Personally, I don't think Texas Express rules necessarily qualify as "better".

I'd have to say as far as 1P aggressivness is concerned....Ronnie Allen was doing it back in the 60's when the game was still in the bunt n snore mode!

Keither McEarthquake was bringing the Ronnie Allen 1P game to new INSANE levels of aggressive not long into the 80's....and that was his WEAKEST GAME!IMO. Talk about who was the BAR TABLE KILLER back in the day.....Mr McCready PERIOD! NO ONE wanted any, and his part in TCOM cemented his fame for us hard core fans!!! Keither is the man...PERIOD!

Want to get locked up in a nasty safe?...no it didn't start from "Ceasar Moralles" it was Captain Hook....Mr. Sigel his bad self! realized when young Earl was figuring out the jump.....he better master the safe game to counter......which won him the title......Captain Hook! along with the title of BEST TOURNY PLAYER EVER!

All the while Allen Hopkins was traveling the roads looking for a game, and the "roads" were avoiding him like the friggin plague!!! you can't out run that short punch stroke no matter how hard you try! Throw whatever game his way you wish and here 30 years later he is still out running the nuts!

NOW, along the same time period came Efren and he was KILLING the competition with an unmatched masterful knowledge of the rails. We didn't always know why he was winning, but the crew sure enough figured it was his grip on the kicking game (3 cushion)that kept them in their seat for extended periods. The quiet likable little man from over seas somewhere was quickly making a name for a little group of islands we all knew really nothing about. Those REALLY in the know over here "whispered" the name Parica....and looked to Spanish Mike in Philly for answers

Later on Texas Express, Earl, Johnny Archer, Varner, Rempe, and a host of AWSOME players was learning that the break was king, and 9ball paid the bills, even though 1 pocket was still the game of the masters.

Now it is 2011.....10ball.....is full rack rotation next? SVB, Mika, Germany, UK, Taiwan, and the friendliest killers the Pinoys are all throwing their hats into the ring as "best o the best" I think there has never been a better time to be a pool fan! Streaming, AZBilliards, Accu-stats, TAR, DCC, the old faithful US Open, and the Super Billiards Expo.......very cool!

I am feeling nostalgic tonight.....

I agree but there was a shift in the rules , and now they seem the norm . Spot the 9 if made on the break would stop alot of the rack haggling , and calling the 9 would help out too.
