I have played in quite a few "no masters" tourneys at the Carom Room. Initially I believed it would be as advertised. But, the "no masters" label is very misleading, if not downright wrong. I personally know of one player that was once a master but now avoids any tournament where he could be tagged with the rating of master. So, he enters the "no masters" tourneys and usually finds his way into the cash or the winners circle. Have I beaten this guy? Yes. Once in a great while. But, like trying to beat too many of the other so called "no masters", I might as well be trying to shoot down a rocket with a 12-gauge. I would be willing to bet that every person who reads these threads knows someone of similar caliber.
The Carom Room tournaments are so well run, so well organized, and the facilities and equipment are such that I wish there was a way of setting up another division or two for the players who have never been masters or national champions and do not now, and have never, played at a masters level. This, I am sure, would not be easy to do and would be controversial in the beginning. But, some tournaments do discriminate against players of "known ability". It wouldn't be long and it would become quite evident who should not be allowed into these true "no masters" events.
I, for one, do not take much pleasure in winning money in the calcutta. My goal is to be a strong tournament player and finish as high up on the list as I can. I want to test my ability as I grow in my skill level. But, the competition should be fair. Right now, for too many of the players, I do not believe it is fair. Too many highly skilled master level players are allowed into the Carom Room tournaments. I would hate to see the tournament fade away, as so many around the area do, because of decreased interest.
Thanks for allowing me to give my two cents worth.
