Beloit, WI - The Carom Room - $1500 Added - Jan 22nd - "No Masters" - 9-Ball

Duane,
I sent $105 out today for Chris Baumann, Josh Smith and Brian Wilken. Any chance of saving 3 spots?

Just posted the mail from today. With updates we are at 54 now. Can't imagine we will get 42 more in the mail in two days. Always first come first served basis.

If you don't see it posted on Friday then I would highly recommend being in the parking lot at 9:45 am on Saturday assuming spots are open

Who wants to play??? Reasonable $35 entry fee, calcutta, Diamond bar boxes, food & beverage...

Still plenty of spots available, doors open at 10:00 am on Saturday

Phones & pm's still going strong

Even if you don't play come check out the tourney & activity. Always action, great food, plenty of beverages, big flat screens, Carom Room shirts and various billard merchandise. Dave is also available for any cue repair needs

One more round of updates for the night now posted on page 1. Local Thursday night tourney always takes a few spots.

We have 7 spots remaining and then we start putting names on the waiting list. We always use a few names from the waiting list (5 to 10) but there is no guarantee.

Added 3 & dropped 4... 8 spots to go :yikes:

I know 3 that are in the mail for sure, could me more or none at all!!

Drop 3 more and add 9 from the mail (I believe)... looks like 2 spots still available!

I'll get the updates posted for prepaid entries shortly

I have updated the entry list. The numbers may have changed slightly. Please check to make sure you are still there!

We have a full field of 96 currently with one on the waiting list. I would certainly expect a few more "no shows" tomorrow so if you want to play get to Beloit tonight or before 10:00 am tomorrow and pay your entry to get on the waiting list. Any entries not used for the tournament will be refunded.

See you all tomorrow ;)

Doors open at 10:00 am or just before. If you want to play please get there early and ask to "sign up".

I will provide some updates once the first round gets going

Several last minute cancellations :( Maybe time for a cancellation fee??

Ended up with 92 players and $5490 in the calcutta for a total payout $8997 for the weekend

This tourney was an amazing field!! This has got to be the toughest "non-master" tourney around. Both matches I lost, my opponnet never missed a ball or made a mistake. Hard to believe many of these out of state players are not master caliber players. I would put most of these out of state players against many of our Wisconsin "masters" and win a lot of money. I guess the no master tourney is not for us. Good luck to all in the finals, I will not be there.

I have played in quite a few "no masters" tourneys at the Carom Room. Initially I believed it would be as advertised. But, the "no masters" label is very misleading, if not downright wrong. I personally know of one player that was once a master but now avoids any tournament where he could be tagged with the rating of master. So, he enters the "no masters" tourneys and usually finds his way into the cash or the winners circle. Have I beaten this guy? Yes. Once in a great while. But, like trying to beat too many of the other so called "no masters", I might as well be trying to shoot down a rocket with a 12-gauge. I would be willing to bet that every person who reads these threads knows someone of similar caliber.

The Carom Room tournaments are so well run, so well organized, and the facilities and equipment are such that I wish there was a way of setting up another division or two for the players who have never been masters or national champions and do not now, and have never, played at a masters level. This, I am sure, would not be easy to do and would be controversial in the beginning. But, some tournaments do discriminate against players of "known ability". It wouldn't be long and it would become quite evident who should not be allowed into these true "no masters" events.

I, for one, do not take much pleasure in winning money in the calcutta. My goal is to be a strong tournament player and finish as high up on the list as I can. I want to test my ability as I grow in my skill level. But, the competition should be fair. Right now, for too many of the players, I do not believe it is fair. Too many highly skilled master level players are allowed into the Carom Room tournaments. I would hate to see the tournament fade away, as so many around the area do, because of decreased interest.

Thanks for allowing me to give my two cents worth.

There's an old saying that came to mind after reading these posts...haters gonna hate.

The guys at the Carom Room do the absolute best they can to keep the no-master's fields fair. Sadly, you're ALWAYS going to have players that are right on that line of being a master or not. It's impossible to get the rankings perfect, but the Carom Room is damn close in my opinion.

I agree. The Carom Room does a great job at sorting this out and watching players. I think the tournament they run, the facility they provide and the people there are fantastic!! I totally understand this is very difficult. The problem is the out of state players. Look at the list of the entries and the people that finished in the money. I see maybe one person from WI. Also look at the number of the entries from WI. Very low. Why is that?? I believe these out of state players are flying under the radar and are stealing our money. If they have not played in any state tourneys there probably isn't much info. on them. Difficult to rate ability on an unknown player. I am not a hater, I just don't like to give my money away to out of state players that should not be allowed to play.
