getting a signature on a cue

my gf has a black widow edition mcdermott cue. she wants to get it signed by jeanette lee when she comes to town this week. she is concerned about the signature wearing off when using it to play, such as sliding it in and out off the case a couple times a week.

can a finish be put on it to protect it from being rubbed off ? i would greatly appreciate any suggestions.

My recommendation is to lightly sand the area where the signature is to be done.
400/600 grit should do it. The ink won't 'take' to un-prepped, hard surface finish.
After the signature is done, have that area immediately (or ASAP), shot with clear-coat.
Don't touch it until the clear-coat is done.

thanks for the tip. btw would wet sanding the area and using a spray can of automotive clearcoat work. i dont want to mess up the existing finish on it. just thinking about scuffing it up a lil bit. any body think that would work ? i would hate for my gf to kill me for messing up her cue.

you want the sig., to hold the ink, then a quick spritz of clear to seal after her
Jeanette Hancock goes on.
Use a light solvent to wipe away any remaining sanding dust.
You can add another coat or two later on to get your build but the main thing is to
get it sealed ASAP.
Give it a week and you can finish-sand the over-spray and polish it out.
Should last forever.

thanks. you have been a big help. my gf wanted the sig on the butt where it says black widow. i told her i didnt think that would work because it it some kind of white marblelized material. i dont think it would be a good idea to sand paper that. i suggested on one of the maple veneer points on the forearm and she agreed to that.

You don't want to sand it all the way down to the cue. Just roughing up the finish. It should work fine on the white part of the butt.

Woodworth's shop is in Dickson Tenn. You might contact him and possibly get it sprayed and buffed out by a cue maker.

Make sure you use a good pen

Archival ink is a must. Those Sanford Sharpies write dramatic, but can fade fast with UV light. A clear with UV protection would be a good choice as well, even with an archival pen.
