question about ordering a custom cue

Hello everyone and thank you in advance for all the help. I love this forum and greatly appreciate all of the cue makers on this site that help the ignorant like myself.

My question is...would you be insulted as a cuemaker to have someone give you a blank made by another cue maker to have a cue built?

I would like to get a custom cue and really like the John davis blanks but I would feel horrible if I insulted a cue maker by asking him to build a cue made by someone else.....

Is John still making blanks, if so, get him to make the whole thing if possible
 
Yes! John Davis is still making blanks. Not really sneaky's anymore, but the best of the best fullsplice blanks available to custom cuemakers. John occasionally will build a complete cue for customers and friends. I convert many of his blanks and I spend alot of time at his shop as he is a good friend. Many cuemakers use his blanks to create fine high quality custom cues. Nothing wrong with that in my eyes! John Davis blanks won't be around forever, but I'd get 'em while the gettin is good! I would be happy to quote you on a custom cue using a John Davis blank. Send me a PM with your design request and well go from there. Jon Spitz
 
Thank you for the reply. Do I contact Mr. Davis directly or do I have to buy his blanks through someone else like superiorcues.com?

There are only a handful of cuemakers that actually do the full splicing themselves. I don't see why a cuemaker would have a problem finishing out a Davis or Prather blank if they, themselves, don't make the full splices. I personally have found a few cuemakers that had no problems finishing out a full splice.
 
I have no problem using another builder's full-splice blanks.
Schmelke, Prather, Bear, etc. all make fine F/S blanks.
They've been doing it for a while and know what they're doing.
I have no reservations regarding the quality of their work
and have every confidence that I can build the cue as requested.

Where I draw the line is when being asked to build using another
builder's 'A' jointed blank. I certainly won't put my name on it
and will politely tell my client, Thanx but No Thanx.
If I didn't build the 'A' joint, I'm not building the cue.
The 'A' jnt. is the heart of the cue. Get the A-jnt wrong and the
whole cue is wrong.
That's not to imply that some of our fine builders aren't hitting the
mark as far as A-jnt construction. That's not the point, not at all.
There are many different ways to construct an A-jnt. Some I approve of
and some I feel are questionable. I have every confidence in my own work.
It would take a tremendous leap of faith on my part to blindly accept
someone else's construction methods to be equal to or superior to my own.
Let's be honest, once the forearm is connected to the handle, you don't
know what's on the inside. There's just too much at risk.
 
If you buy from Superior, you can see before hand what you are getting. I have personally seen a few Prathers made into Cues, and they are another good choice
