UW Madison Fall Pool Interest?!

I'm attempting to start up a campus pool league at UW Madison for this coming fall semester. We've had trouble holding consistent attendance in the past, so I'm trying to get a head start on recruiting to see if this league is a feasible project or not.

Obviously there is a no experience/skill/talent requirement. My inclusion will be more than evidence of that.

If we can get enough people committed to showing up 1 time a week, then we'll have no problem having a local cue manufacturer dish out some worthy prizes just for participation (I don't believe rewarding "winning" the league is allowed. But I'm sure some free table time vouchers would be in order)

We don't need an army, just 6 to 20 players who are half as enthused as I am.

So grab a twig, or use one of ours. And maybe go home with a new one just for showing up.

P.S. Sorry if this is posted in the wrong place. Relatively new to posting.

Good luck with your quest. I think pool used to be bigger in colleges a few years ago. I have two boys in Cornell right now and they have a nice but smallish pool room there. I believe about eight tables but they are kept in good shape. There is even a nine footer in the dorm and it is free but it seems that my boys are about the only ones that take the game seriously there. We will see what this new year brings, maybe it will pick up.

I had a blast playing the game when I was in college both on and off campus.

UW Madison just built a new multi million dollar union that includes a basement games room. We were lucky to get 5 new Brunswick 9 footers. Pro-cut pockets, tournament cloth.

Now I just need some players to appreciate it :)

You need to reach out to Jerry Briesath, he lives in Madison during the summer months and does tons of lessons. I think he now does his lessons out of The Brass Ring. He would know tons of players and probably could do a little training session onsite.

Good Luck to you!

I love the Brass Ring! Probably the closest thing Madison has left to a legit pool hall. I'll see if I can get a hold of him. However this league will run in the fall, about 2 weeks after classes start.

We may be moving to Madison soon. If we do, my wife and I will definitely play.

Visited the Brass Ring recently. Those tables need some TLC. The waitress told us they were going to put new cloth on before the start of the fall season. Not a second too soon.

We'd love to have you. Shoot me a pm when you get here and I'll email you with the league info.

If you happen to be in Madison in the meantime after 3pm on a weekday, the Union South pool tables will be available. Our tables aren't quite as pricey as the Brass Ring's, but our cloth is in much better shape.

The only Cornell room I know about has 6 tables and it's also currently being used for storage so only four are usable. Hopefully it's just a summer thing. Given the dearth of 9' hourly tables in Ithaca, it's heaven all the same.

Incidentally, there's a weekly NAPA league starting in late August. If your sons are interested, they (or you) can shoot me a PM.

I'd still contact him, he might be able to provide some help or worse case point you in the right direction towards people who know players.

Also, I believe he stays in Wisco until after the temps in AZ drop below 100, which is usually around October.

The Sett at Union South appears to be for students, faculty, and paid members.

Does one have to be a paid member to play pool recreationally on a random day? How about for your league?

Anybody interested should send me a message. I am already in process of getting a new format to Madison that is made for the beginner and intermediate player. We focus on fun and sportsmanship first !!

If non student players could play on it I'd be there!
