Several people have asked me about Ted and his book, so I thought I would provide a little background for everyone.

Ted was a pool room owner, pool player, card room owner, card player, pianist and piano tuner and inventor. He was an intellect and approached everything that way. Although not well educated, he was smart beyond his formal education. He owned numerous patents.

I first met, and became friends with Ted, in the mid 60's, around 1964. We played pool in the same rooms and were casual friends. I worked at the first Jointed Cue in Sacramento in 1967 for Terry Stonier. Ted and I became good friends, playing several times a week. Ted also became a good friend to Terry. Ted introduced Terry and me to Lloyd Hickey, a local business owner whom later owned the El Rancho Hotel, site of one of Terry Stonier’s largest tournaments.

Ted was a very good player. By today’s standards, perhaps a very good shortstop. He played every player that came through town. Sometimes winning, often losing, he just loved to play and didn’t mind giving a little money to the road players. Road players back then were the likes of Buddy, Louie Roberts, Hawaiian Brian, Jimmy Marino, Ronnie Allen, Richie Florence etc; all the champions we now talk about.

Ted was the first person, I know of, to play what he called “Points”. It’s basically what we now use for the “One Pocket Challenge”. We would play that for hours on end. We played to a certain number of points, one inning each rack, until someone won. Usually not me.

Ted was also a very good teacher. Demonstrating and explaining things in terms that pool players could understand. Although not soliciting lessons, many people would go to him with questions or for help.

When I got home from my vacation in SE Asia in 1969, I went Ted’s house and told him I needed to get my game back in order and could he help me. We went into his garage where he had his table and he showed me the “Wagon Wheel” system or drill as he considered it. I worked with the drill then and many times since I recently started playing again, to fine tune my position play. He showed the “Wagon Wheel” to a number of people and after some time decided to make the booklet about it and some other position nuances. I believe he ultimately had it printed in the late 80s or early 90s. He died not too long after the book was published, so it was never widely distributed.

The books for sale now were printed by Ted back then and recently provided by his daughter, to have him remembered well and to share his love of pool with other players.
