APA Masters question

I decided to quit playing handicapped matches and just play masters this session. Apparently starting in January you now have to be on a regular team to be in masters. Do any of you know if you also have to stay qualified on that regular team?

If you do that is going to aggravate the hell out of me.

I played on masters only for a couple years but am now a sub on a 23 team so unless they changed the rule within the last 6-8 months you should be fine. Also I'm in Colorado so it could vary by area

Thanks for the replies. The masters session has already started so they would have me locked in to this new rule. What I do after the session is over depends on the specifics.

I captained a masters team for 5 sessions. At that time(ended in June 2011)you did not need to be on any active team. You could just play on a masters team. We had several players in the league that played masters only. 2 of my players hadn't been on an active APA team in at least 5 years.

That of course doesn't mean it hasn't changed.

That is how it was here too. The rule change starts here in January. So glad this got sprung on us after the new masters session started.

that's going to screw up a lot of teams. There are a lot of players who won't play on a regular team that will play on masters.

Yep it will. If I don't have to be active it won't be so bad. I dont mind paying the dues. I do mind being forced to play something I dont want to in order to be allowed to play something I do.

at least you only have to pay APA dues once a year and on a regular team it's only the nightly play fee so it's not too bad. Unless you really hate playing on the team.

I really like my team. I just don't care much for handicapped matches. Just needed a change of pace and I wanted to do masters because it's only once a month as opposed to every week with the handicapped league.

Sounds like a way to force more money out of players. I contemplated playing on a master team, but if I have to play two nights to do it, it won't work. Seems like a pretty interesting format that would be fun.

You have to be on a regular team for handicap purposes. It doesn't mean you have to play every week only the minimum number of matches per session.

If your on a team that doesn't require you being there all the time play 4 matches out of the session or on an as needed basis.

This way everybody is happy.

So basically what they want is for you to play regular so they can make the masters players 7s and then they will have to break up their standing masters teams because of the only 2 7s per team rule???

Masters doesn't have handicaps so that isn't an issue. I can't see a reason to require players that are on masters teams to play on regular teams other than to force team creation. There are 24 or 25 masters teams in my area. If each team has 4 players that means 96-100 players that need teams. Pretty sure that would force new teams to be created.

All players in the APA have to have an active handicap, scores in Masters are not counted. Because of this if you were playing Masters only you could not be handicapped.

If you were a 9 ball SL 9 for instance if you weren't on an active roster there would be no way to rate you.

Masters Format was developed to give our upper level players another level of competition, not to totally replace regular league. I agree Masters is a lot more fun for many different reasons. But, regular league still has it's good points as well.

Simply put, THATS BULLSHIT.... A blind man could see the motive for that move....

I understand that, but if you only want to play masters being handicapped is a non-issue. They could easily create a rule to force rate players who only play masters in case they switch to regular league and for handicapped tournament (singles, scotch doubles and three person team) purposes.

I chose to just go with masters for several reasons. I wanted to play better players, tired of handicapped matches, wanted to be able to keep a team together and I just wanted to be able to play league once a month. My issue isn't with either league, but a rule forcing people to join another team in order to take part in masters. Heck I probably wouldn't be aggravated with that either if I knew about it before the masters session started.

That rule is specific to each location I believe. I don't think its required by National rules but can be from the local operators. Find a team and just play 4 matches.

I guess the issue in your area is that they did it backwards by allowing you to play Masters only to begin with.

In our area it was never an option so it's all we know. All of the reasons you listed are many of the same that attracted me to Masters as well. But good luck with your decision. I hope you decide to continue playing.

In my area, regular/handicapped play is necessary only for things that require a handicap - singles, special events, etc. They're going to lose players if they think that 100 people will go out and find teams to be on or even start new teams. Good luck.

gunzby,

Looks like we play in the same masters league.
maybe we will run across each other this session.

Give the charlotte apa office a call, they should be able to answer your question. I usually talk to clint, he seems to be the most responsive.
