Schon wgt bolt

I'm trying to lighten up a Schon. Does the Schon wgt bolt do anything besides adjust weight? What would happen if I just removed the whole bolt? The last time I did this on a cue, the bottom half fell off the stick. Don't want that to happen again.

thanks, jed

Hi Jed:
Some Schon's have delrin butt caps, A bolt would need to stay in there.

The bolt is available in aluminum, ridiculously light.
You should know that if the wght. bolt has never been removed before now, you may not get it out.
They're glued in.
A CM or C-Tech who has done one already can be of great help.

Thanks. This cue was made for me by Schon. I am the only owner. I have not tried to remove it yet (never been touched by me). I am trying to find out if I can lighten it up some so I won't have to trade / sell it. I tried to put a magnet on the end of the bolt, but the only magnet I have is about as big as the butt. I can drop a corner of the magnet in but I cannot feel any pull by the bolt. I thinking it already has an alum. bolt in it now. I would think a steel bolt would have a pretty good tug on the magnet. I might be out of luck. By-the-way, in case it is steel....how much weight difference would I expect by replacing with and alum. bolt?

Thanks, jed

I have no way of knowing the length of the bolt you currently have in there.
If it's alum., you should be able to scratch the head of the bolt fairly easily.

Just thought of something ..... the Schon I'm trying to adjust is either ebony or rosewood (see attached).

Here's the question: Would this type wood play/feel different from other Schon models like the STL 1, 2, or 3?

My guess is that it does not have that much ebony or rosewood in it as their specific gravity is much higher than maples. They are probably sleeves since the weight is already at 15.7oz as you stated in your other thread. The only other ways that this cue is this light is it from a very large hole thru the cue, or it is undersized in diameter. I say this assuming that it is standard length.

To address your question though: Yes different types of woods will feel different because of their density they all have a specific resonance tone. Kind of like filling a glass up with water and rubbing the top to play music. Taking water out or adding it is the same as changing the density of the wood.

He wants to lighten the cue. So I'm guessing it's the butt that weighs 15.7 oz., not the cue (despite what he said in the other thread).

You hit it on the head. I am getting the "tone" that feels much different from my other Schon cues. I think that my whole weight bolt / leather wrap issue is simply a very different feeling cue because of the type of wood used on this cue compared to my others. May be a good thing....who knows.

I'm done with this issue....This has given me a headache. Thanks to all who replied on this thread the other one about the wrap. I really appreciate the knowledge you guys have.
