Finishing Water buffalo collar

I just put on a water buffalo joint collar on a 4 point. When I purchased this piece of horn it was dark but with an orange type color. Now that I have cut and sanded it is black with white. I also did a search on here and saw other pics that looked just like what I have now. Is there something that I could have done different to maintain the color that the piece had when I recieved it?

It is possible that the horn color was different as you cut deeper into it. That is common on horn. What you see on the surface may change as you get closer to the center of the piece. So there is probably nothing you could have done for it. Most Buffalo horn is black with some white streaking. Some of it is kind of yellowish. The yellowish stuff is usually kind of translucent and is not very attractive IMO.

I use quite a bit of water buffalo and have found that what you are referring to will probably go away as you go through the finishing process. It is much like
black phenolic--it approves with the finishing process.
