Help!!? 5/16x14 Shaft Insert pulled out-Stripped out Wood>!

I have made a cue where the pilot on the joint was a close fit on the diameter and it shut out on both the collar face and on the end face of the spigot.
It was easy enough for me to create, I have had many years of fitting out injection moulding tools.
When I compared another shaft that only shut out on the collar I could not see any difference.It seemed the extra work of increasing the face area showed no improvement or advantage.
The resonance of the cue remained the same with either option.
What I found to be more important than the joint type was the amount of compression holding the 2 parts together.

But don't you think that by building it close tolerance there is less chance of surface contamination to occur?

I agree that if a cue does not roll straight, the first thing to look at is the joint surface.


Like I said before, I don't know if my theory is right or wrong but it gave me the feeling that it was pretty close to being right.

Haven't seen you around lately but always admired you for sharing your knowledge freely with other builders.

I think the concept is great but surfaces will get dirty more when the cue is apart and in someone's dirty case than it will together. On getting out, I use to like to go to Valley Forge to see a few friends such as yourself and especially Dan Janes but now I choose to be a hermit. At least for the past few years anyway.

Ok....I'm bringing out my big gun... I told everyone that to keep the surfaces clean, they must use joint protectors. :thumbup:

i was going to send in the complete cue to JOSS cues,

I just got an e-mail from Dan Janes @ JOSS and he said, "Its time for a new shafT". I really dont think this is a fair statement on a 95%+ condition cue, that just started being used this year and now the shaft has completely failed. I have had 30+ cues from this time period and this is the first problem that i have ever had, so I know it was not from anything that i could have done to the cue. I have cues that i have played with since 1988 and i have played with these cues every month and the cues look mint, 99%+, so I know how to take care of my cues.

So, is this fair, or should I have someone attempt to repair the cue.

This is one of the JOSS custom lines that has the GOLD--JOSS CUstom on the butt and shaft, if I just get another JOSS shaft, it wont be as mint as this one and it wont have the right time period of shaft collar?

Should I have another shaft mad and have the joss collar taken off and put onto the new shaft?

I have known Dan Janes for 16 of my 21 years at this. He has never steered me or anyone else that I know of wrong. Which ever you decide, it's your decision to get it repaired or replaced.
