On Monday this week my trusty lathe motor and switch gave out. The motor and fwd/rev switch was new in 1974.
Anyway , when I went into the shop to pick up a replacement B56 frame single phase motor and switch saw a 3phase electronic controller on special.
I brought the following ,

another picture is here with other models for the USA / Canada
http://www.ericdrives.com/eric_450_MINI.htm
Mine is EI-450-S1L and it is driving a 3/4hp (.55k/w) 3 phase 4pole motor.
These are fairly new out here at the moment.A bit on the pricey side but after 1 afternoon with it, I want one on each lathe now.
An electrician has set up my unit, legal reasons and if something goes wrong no insurance otherwise.
I have the acceleration 1 and deceleration 1 settings at 0.2 seconds .
It stops very quickly and it can go straight to reverse. The box of tricks sorts it all out. I did have it set to 0.1 secs but it was too quick for my comfort.
This set up will make thread cutting alot easier with the almost instant reverse.
For the hz control on the motor, I have it adjustable from 15-60hz, at 60 hz the no load speed on my motor is 1710rpm.
It is recommended that when the motor is running less than 30 hz for any length of time to have a ancillary cooling fan.
I have a pot for the speed control and a switch for the Fwd stop Rev in a location that is easy to access. It does have a hz pot on the unit iself as well as fwd and rev.
I am getting some micro switches and parts , so when thread cutting, the lathe will stop at the desired thread length every time for that setup and for tapping holes auto reverse when at depth, with a micro switch on the tailstock.
