yesterday i spent a few hours doing something i like to do when i am not playing pool, watching pool:D. although i have not played bcapl in 5 years i watched the live stream of the bcapl ohio state championships with great interest.

i was into it so much my gf came into the room a couple of times to see what i was yelling about:o. i saw players of every level play. from guys making efren like shots to missing the easiest straight in you ever saw. i was cheering on the winners and saying damn for the losers.

now what i am about to say is not an attempt to bash the bcapl or their players. it is directed at the guys who love to jump on the apa bashing bandwagon everytime they get the opportunity. the guys who think bcapl and its players are the holey grail of amateur pool. the guys who say bcapl players are serious and better players and everyone else is just bangers.

in a few hours on here i saw everything they criticize bangers for.

drilling holes in chalk like they were drilling a well.
setting the chalk upside down.
slop shots. yea i know they lost their turn.
failure to acknowlege their opponent before or after a match..that is rude and unsportsmanlike to me.
sharking

and here is something i dont get. a player commited a foul, at least i thought he did and no one called him on it. so later i posted on here a rule question . buddy eick, the bcapl national head referee was kind enough to reply and confirm that it was indeed a foul. not only was it a foul but one that would result in a loss of game.

now here i am sitting at my computer, a guy who is a staunch apa defender on this forum, a guy who has not played in bcapl in 5 years or so, spots a loss of game foul .

the opponent, the captain, hell no one on the team caught it. i am thinking wth !! no one on the team was paying attention, no one knows the rule. this is the championships for crying out loud, get your shit together!

in other words i saw the same things yesterday that i see in apa , napa, or my money league.

what does that mean to me? it means we all are human and not perfect. all leagues are good in their own way in promoting amateur pool.

the words of mark griffen"we all know who he is" when posting in the tunica tournament come to mind here. he stated that bcapl was going to be held at the same time and venue as napa "we will try to work together"

so why dont we all on here try to work together for the betterment of all amateuer leagues

Props to you sir!

I've wanted to say what you did on a number of occasions and could never get the words right. You did.

Yes, in the grand scheme of things, we're all hacks to some degree. I run a BCAPL league and we have all of what you describe nearly every week.

Tap, tap, tap.

thank you brian in va and just adub for the nice comments. also thanks to some others who left me some green:thumbup:.

i just finished watching the semis and the finals of the ohio bcapl championships. congrats to tri-county woolleys for winning it.

they had a hard fought battle in the semis against almost heroes with the outcome being 13-11.

the finals were played in a format i had never seen before. 5vs 5 in what i can best describe as a scotch doubles . they beat the cannucks 2-1.

they played loose and without any pressure in the finals at all. even going so far as to laughing and joking when they made a bad shot or left their teamate behind them hooked. they are obviously friends as well as teamates.

to me that is what playing on a team in league is all about. having fun with friends playing the game you love.

Couldn't agree with this statement more. I am 4 weeks in to my first experience in league pool and that's the attitude I have and work on getting the younger guys on my team to understand. The other 4 guys on my team are related so we all get along very well and it does ease the pressure by being able to joke around or give advice without someone getting butt hurt by it.

Absolutely true in all respects sir.

As a person who has devoted untold hundreds of hours over the last 10 years to the study and technical writing of rules, I have come to the immutable conclusion that is doesn't matter how well (or poorly) a rule set is written - as far as the players are concerned, it is a "lead a horse to water" situation.

And, I might add, the skill level of the player or organization in general has little to do with it. In ref classes, I usually make a statement, in a somewhat joking manner, that a player's knowledge of the rules varies inversely with their skill at the table.

The sad thing is, it is frightening how often it is actually true.

Buddy

after reading a lot of comments in the apa threads , the why is there so much rivalry and hatred among leagues thread, oh yea ,and the whats wrong with pool thread because i think it applies here also i resurrected this old thread.

it has been said before and i will say it again. some of you may be the nicest guys you will ever meet in person but it seems when you start stroking your keyboard keys you start stroking your egos also.

there seems to be a lot of apa bashing always going on here and to some extent all leagues in general. this is where the whats wrong with pool thread comes in. there is nothing wrong with pool today, except... the attitude a lot of you pool players on here display. sure the economy is not what it once was, sure the younger generation has 500 other things available to keep them occupied that the older generation did not have.

i want everyone to think about this.... the internet is the most popular method of learning anything new.

if i was a newbie and and got on the internet trying to learn as much as i could about pool and thinking about joining a league and stumbled upon this site. well... some of you posters would amaze the hell outa me.

after digesting all the bs on here and was still intersted in joining a league, i would pick the apa.

why would i pick the apa after reading all the bashing on here? because it has been said many times on here the apa welcomes in new players and their format is geared towards giving lesser skilled players a chance at being competitive " albeit a slight chance".

why would i not choose to join the bcapl as a newbie after reading numerous posts on here ? because bcapl players display a holier than thou attitude and look down upon lesser skilled players, newbies fit in that category you know. i would not feel welcome, maybe a little intimidated joining the bcapl due to the attitudes some posters display on here. i would think all bcapl players fit into that category.

if pool is attract the younger generation it needs to be as inviting as possible when competing with all the activities the younger generation has available to them today, speaking about video games etc;etc;.

i play apa, napa, and an in house money league using the bcapl format. not one of those leagues is perfect, although napa is the best in my book. i enjoy playing in all 3 leagues.they all bring money into pool and help keep poolrooms open. we all should be thankfull for that , not bashing each other.

sorry for the long rant, just giving my opinion of what i have seen posted on here lately.

Pool, like life in general, would be in much better shape if more people tried to get along, and stopped trying to bring others down.

Sadly, this is not the case. In pool, or life in general.

I said it before, and I'll say it again, lorider....great post(s).

thanks robman and dub for the kind words. a couple hundred views and 2 responses.

guess the bashers are speechless when faced with the truth.
