Re-use a joint collar/pin?

Sooo... I might be looking to order a custom cue. At the moment I'm playing with a Mezz cue and I like the united joint with the Wd700 shaft.

Is it possible taking a beat up Mezz cue's joint collar and pin using these for a custom build?
 
Possible, yes. Ethical, no.

Yesterday, I had a potential customer call and want a custom cue built. Its seemed pretty easy and I could have made a few bucks but he wanted a Viking QR pin because he had several Predator shafts to go with it. even though I have have the Viking pins, there is no way I could install them into my cue. It is a proprietary pin and should only be used in a Viking.

I feel the same applies to your request.

I would only agree with your thought that using someone else's propriety pin in your cue is unethical if, and only if, when you bought the Viking QR pins you had to promise to use the pins only when repairing Viking cues. If Viking sells their propriety pins without requiring such a promise, then they obviously don't care if their pins are used in other cues. If they have no problem with it, then there is no ethical dilemma.

Also, if you feel *that* strongly about the sanctity of other people's propriety brands, you shouldn't be working on any brand of cue other than your own.

(I'm mostly being a smart-aleck here, but I also happen to believe what I wrote.)

Repairing a cue is a far cry from using a proprietary part like the Viking QR male pin in the construction or repair of a different brand of cue.

I do have agreement with certain manufacturers about usage of their proprietary parts and others I do not. I don't have to. I've even had them tell me "once you buy it you can do whatever you want..." but they know that they will only be used in the repair or restoration of their cues. Period.

I understand and appreciate your viewpoint. You're doing what you believe is right, and I'm not faulting you for it. I just believe it's a pretty bold statement to label re-using pins as "unethical" when the very company that makes them doesn't care what they're used for.

My comparison to repairing someone else's cue and using someone else's proprietary product may seem far off, but it's really not. If a cue company doesn't care who repairs their cues and doesn't care what their proprietary pins are used for, there is no ethical problem doing either.

I'm not looking for a fight; just expressing my opinion. We're basically having a disagreement on semantics.
