Why so soft?

Fast forward to 0:49:00 and tell me if Johnny Archer pulled the breakshot. Wouldn't you hit the rack a little harder? I mean you're coming straight on to the head ball on the rack, a little harder and center ball would have been just the ticket, no?

When I play straight pool I just break loose a few balls at a time, unless I have the break shot where my cue ball comes into the back of the rack.

If you watch the path of the CB you'll see it's heading a little above the side pocket. If that was struck harder it could have gone straight in the side or up table with the type of hit he used which appeared to be middle left. Johnny's a fairly good 14.1 player so his choice there is a little baffling. Medium speed with follow would have yielded excellent results with very little CB risk. He's kinda lucky the 2 balls that did come out ended up in the position they did.

Judging from the glance off the top ball Johnny gets, he could even have followed the break shot with outside English and speed, but I understand they used Andy cloth at this event, which I've never played on, and many of the pros there didn't know either - he may have been extra careful, making sure the cue ball wouldn't slide towards the middle pocket (which would be the natural change of path if he shot harder). Also, it seems like the balls opened up rather easily on that equipment.

Greetings from Switzerland, David.
