GC IV table roll

I own a 13 year old Gold Crown IV. I bought it new in 2000 and it has only seen moderate recreational use in my house. However, due to several work relocations, it has been broken down, reassembled, and recovered no less than 4 times during the past 10 years. Furthermore, for about 3 of those years (in two 1 1/2 year segments), the table was completely broken and down and stored in a basement awaiting a new relocation.

I recently had the table relocated to my new house and it seemed to play pretty well. However, about a month after relocation, I noticed a pretty severe table roll. What made this table roll strange was that only balls traveling along one of the long rails seem to roll off (always towards the rail). I called the installer, and they sent over a mechanic who re-leveled the table. Again, for about a month it seemed ok. But then it began rolling off in exactly the same fashion. I again called the installer and he again sent a mechanic to address the issue. It again played fine for a couple weeks, but once again, the table has become "unleveled".

Before calling the mechanic again to fix the table, I wanted to ask this forum if there might be something more to this.

- why are balls rolling off only near one of the long rails??
- why does this problem keep reocurring?
- could there be something warped? moving?

any insight would be appreciated.

thanks!

Is this the GC with the angle cut and flush mount corner pocket castings? If it is it sounds to me like your table went bad or "turned" as they would say if it were fresh fruit. I have a very clean GCI I can trade you for yours that should take care of your problem.:thumbup:grin-square:I am sorry I could not be of any help otherwise, hope you get it taken care of without much trouble.

Poor installation? Not all installers are created equal. If the same guy keeps coming back you will get the same job over and over again and again.

Agreed! Is there an installer that you - or anyone else reading this - could reccommend who services the Chicago area?

thanks,

Thanks for the offer  ... it certainly beats my wife's suggestion to trade it in for an air hockey table.

In all seriousness, if I can't get this resolved in reasonably short order, it will get traded for a ProAm.

A gold crown is a gold crown to diamond Billiards company... There just taking it out of there market on a trade in,
So I will offer you $10 more than what diamond offers u on your GC4.
I will be to going o'hare Friday, so I might be able to stop and check out the table problem. You may have a shim that keeps working it way loose..is this problem on the long rail side that you break from?

Rob, thanks for the offer to look at my table, unfortunately I am at work during the week and wouldn't be able to accept.

No, actually the roll is on the rail opposite to where I break.

Regarding the trade in, do you have an idea what diamond would actually offer for my GC?

Thanks.

Most dealers will buy it for dollar and sell it back to you for $100. Be patient. Find the right mechanic. Someone will check in here and give you a referral. I have a GCIV from 1998. The original installation was not great. In Aug 2011 I had the cushions replaced, the bed & rails covered, rails/pockets re-calibrated. It plays like a champ. GCIV's are tanks. Let someone look at it and see what's going on. Good Luck.

EDIT...just curious. How can a table be re-leveled after it was leveled and covered. Wouldn't the rails & cloth have to removed to tweek the slate?

Good advice. I am certainly not looking to give the table away.

When they came out to relevel the table, there were two guys who came out. One guy put a level on the table at various spots while the other guy crawled under the table and did something - I did not crawl under to watch. But the rails and cloth were definitely not removed. The whole operation took about 15 minutes.

Sounds like the guy's used the Gold Crown 4 leveling system that is on the frame.....no one uses that around the outside of the frame...just the ones in the center of the table to match the seams.

If the table plays better when they leave and then starts to play bad after time played on the table....then it's sounds like the levelers are backing out and creating the roll off.
The vibration of the balls rolling around the table will back the levelers off if the guy didn't hit them with some spray glue to hold them in place.

No one I now uses the metal levelers for that reason....best to use hard wood shims for leveling the slates....climb under the table where the tables rolling off...then turn the screw leveler 1/4 or 1/2 turn and see if that helps.

Next time make sure the guy's doing the table use wedges.
The leveler maybe striped and not holding.

Not saying that's the problem....just something you may want to check.

thanks,

Jerimy chambers is supposed to be one of the best. I'm gonna have him do my olhausen I just got probably by the end of the month.

His number is 7085749888.

Table

First thing check frame bolts' if there loose....thats another problem...If they used wood shims on the outside or anywhere under the slates it's possible for the shims to vibrate out just the same way mark talked about the screw jack levers backing off with vibration. The ball return transfers a lot of vibration to the slate sill of the GC.
Also, like mark said adjust a screw jack and use spray glue as suggested above. But I use hot glue. Or superglue, and if there is wood shims that are snapped off put a full shim next to it and tap it in and remove the broken off shim, then replace the broken off shim with the full shim so you can set the shim to get rid of the roll. Once the shims are in place use super glue or hot glue to lock the leveling jack&shims in place- shim to frame will be glued- not glued shim to slate' ..> if theres plastic shims..adjust them and super glue to hold in place.

I don't see how the table can be leveled unless starting from scratch. They wasted their time and yours. But we learn from this.

Thanks for the insight...it looks like I need to hire a top notch mechanic.

...called Jerimy Chambers a couple times, no-answer - voicemail full. Will keep trying.
