To get better at gambling do you think it's better to play someone stronger than you and get a spot or play them for less money and play them even? I know it can be tough to play getting a spot, kind of a mental thing. What do you guys think?

welcome back from your ban

????? Thanks for your input on my question lol.

I've been lurking these forums for a while and I have a genuine question and I get a red rep from softshot because he thinks I'm someone else? Doesn't seem very fair. Maybe if I made a dumb thread or something but my thread is a good question, no?

umm lets see your posting style hasn't left anyone's memory yet

you know I red repped you and why you know how to send me a PM.. and you know how to make a poll on your very first post.... without even checking to make sure the account worked first

have a nice day Chrisbanks/ pocketpoint/assclown

As if knowing how to make a poll on an internet forum is some big secret?

I keep catching you and you keep pointing at yourself..

what was it a year or so ago when you hacked the forum software and couldn't be red repped... that one sucked for you because it compromised your mac address thats why you abandoned it

if AZ really wanted to fix this... they would make an AZ app that ties mac address to user ID that way old posters could be left alone and all new members would only have to submit to a one time mac addy check...

works great for flushing trolls... they need new gear for each new identity yet doesn't inconvenience the existing members with valid passwords

You keep catching me? Absurd.

Anyway, I'll answer the OP's question sincerely: I prefer to play cheap sets even. I generally only play to get better anyway, and have no illusions about making money out of the game, and I think playing with a spot, and the mentality it can bring, can hinder that.

I think most people would be way better off learning how to match up. It seems like a lot of players don't really understand how to do it. Playing cheap sets with someone considerably better is donating not gambling so if it is a gambling poll with just those two options I would have to go with option number 1.

Are you trying to get better at "gambling" or "pool?"

If you're trying to be a good gambler, you should be getting a spot whenever you need it and whenever you don't if you can. The point of gambling is to win. Being a good gambler and being a good pool player sometimes are not the same thing.

If you're trying to get better at pool, I'd say if you don't need a huge spot, play even, if you do need a pretty big spot, take one ball/game less than what you need. You still have the chance to win and you will still have pressure put on you.

Either way, never put yourself at a huge disadvantage, after all you need to learn how it feels to win just as much as you need to put pressure on yourself.

Since your poll says "gambling" I'm voting for getting a spot.

I don't understand your question.

Is it about getting better at gambling per se, or better playing of pool when gambling?

I play decent at tournaments. But I dog it more when playing for the dough, so I wanted to get more experience at it.

Thanks for the replys so far everyone.

Just keep gambling and it should get better. Likely what is happening is just a mental problem. You like feel when you enter a tournament the money is "gone" already and you can't "lose" anymore. You only have the option of going home with the same amount of money or winning more than you "started" with.

Gambling however can feel like you always have more to lose. This feeling should go away over time with experience. You want to get to a point where the money doesn't matter while you are playing. This doesn't mean you don't care about money, as that can cause you to be irrational and careless, but while you are playing the money has a completely neutral effect on your psyche.

I would still get a spot if you need it. You will have just as much pressure to win and you'll give yourself the chance to make some money to do more gambling or pay for more table time.

If you're going to gamble with someone you have no chance with, why not just save the money up and go pay a top instructor and/or pro for lessons and play time? The reason you gamble is to win money and if you're not giving yourself the chance to win money, put the money towards something that will help you.

Both.

To make a good game isn't easy. Getting a spot messes with some peoples minds. You have to know that you can beat the person, and the person you're playing has to know they can beat you.

I would say 75% of the time the match is won in negotiation. The right spot either way makes all the difference.

Best,

Yup....... You got "me"! lol....

Your claims are making the connection that a new user to AZ is a new user to message boards, imying I shouldn't know how to click on User CP, send a private message or make a poll. Which is your obviously wrong. I've posted on many forums and just because I am new here doesn't mean I am new to forums.... Now stop accusing me of being someone else and don't red rep me for no good reason.

Have a good day.
