I just started playing Pool this year, I use an old "Camel Bux stick" the miz signature one? My dad and his friend always shot pool together and are APA 7's, I am very new I play a cash 8 ball league, I went from a crap 3(22%) to a 4 soon to be 5. My game has improved greatly, I beat 5/6s pretty efficiently now. Now... I'm looking to upgrade to a cue with good ball control and something that I think I'll feel comfortable shooting... but this is where you guys come in.. Recommendations, etc? I want to stay around the 400$ area.

Derek,
Go visit a cue maker and have him discuss with you the different shaft setups you can get on your cue. Its important. Then the rest is easy.

You can

buy a good Sneaky Pete for that, and it will play like a $1,000 stick. A good Sneaky Pete is one of Pool's best bargains.

Have a good cuemaker make one for you. Where do you live?

For $400 you can get a nice production cue with a high performance shaft. That is exactly what I would do. The Joss suggestion was a good one.

:killingme:

Oh boy...here we go again. Can't wait to hear the recommendations.

My recommendation is a Meucci from a smaller dealer from AZBilliards.:D
Wherever you go, there is no need to pay retail price.

For $400 you can buy a great pool cue! An Erwin Cue is a good value cue.

Pool cues for sale and cats are free.

Test out cues with different joint sizes different diameter shafts weights tips and so on until you find something you like.

I agree with Joss as a good starter. I have 2 butts, 2 stock shafts and a low deflection bdcues smaller diameter shaft made for the butts. For a stainless joint, they are hands down bar none excellent. But the end result it what feels best to you.

Keep us posted :)

Agree with the Joss recommendation, excellent cue for around your 400 range and the Joss is a fairly high quality cue that if you take care of, it will work for you for a loooooong time, however, excellent cues can be had for less then your max budget

If your dad and his friend are APA 7's, seems likely one or both of them MAY be proficient about having constructive advice regarding cues...

Have you asked them their advice? What do they shoot with?

Let me know when you're ready to buy, and I'll be happy to discuss your options as well as share some customer feedback on different brands and models.

My opinion is that your confidence level is your best asset, so the cue you buy will need to be very similar to your current cue in weight/balance/tip size, but have the advancements in technology to help improve your game to the next level. No drastic changes, but better quality will keep your confidence high and you'll enjoy your new cue much much more. As far as style, that's the personal part.
So as I said, when you're ready, I'll be happy to help you with your selection.

Any starter set will work. Make sure you get the irons 5-9, a hybrid 3 or 4, a wedge, and a 3 wood. Oh and long putters are banned now.

You'll thank me in a few years.

A guy at the pool hall, today, had a new Predator Sneaky Pete. The one with green veneers. Said he paid under $400 for it.
I hit a few balls with the cue and was very impressed.

My father and his friend share the same cues, I have no idea what it is. I live near Lancaster, PA. I don't think there are any cue makers left in the area. Anyhow how to find the same cue feel compared to my camal stick(19 1/2 oz) I tried finding info on this cue and i can't find anything!! I wouldn't mind also finding a shaft that would fit it to use for breaking.

Come to Vegas!!

Join us at the Rio in Las Vegas for the BCAPL National event.
35 different divisions and events - including 3 Pro events.

We usually have 50 different exhibitors - with a LOT of cues available for you to try out. There are thousands of players you can talk to for opinions.

We even have collectible cues for sale - as well as a group from the American Cuemakers Assn (ACA).

So that is what I would suggest.

All of this is in July, 2013.

"The Greatest Pool Tournament on Earth".

You are real close to Proficient Billiards who can do anything you want.

And for a good break shaft...you can come to my house.

Plus I have over 100 cues to choose from.

Maryland isn't far either if you need a cue maker.
