I have a 5/16-18 piloted cue. Will it be ok if I put a 5/16-18 NON-piloted shaft on it? I don't want to take a chance on damaging the butt or the shaft.

I agree with the two previous comments, with the exception of some older cues that have long "pilots" that extend up t 1/2 an inch. As long as the pin extends far enough out from the butt for the shaft to get a good bite (3/4" or more), you're OK.
