I'm here to help

Randy,

If you're in a slump, how can you figure out if there is a mental or mechanical problem in your game? Should you take a break if you suspect it is either before it takes a solid hold on your playing?

Best,
Mike

I actually did this last week with spot shots. I made 5 in a row when cutting to the right, but when I switched to the left, I couldn't make one.

Normal.

Bring the cue ball closer to the target (diamond away) and when you make the shot five times move the cue ball back one diamond and then another diamond.

Hi Mike

This is always a dangerous situation.
I never take a break, I work harder.

A wise man once told me (a long, long time ago)
that when you are in a slump....
"GO LEARN SOMETHING NEW"

I always go back to Mother Drills 1-2-3, these are the basics for my fundamentals. Then I add something new to my game.

If you think it is Mental then:
Review your Mantra
Review you three Pre-Shot Routines

This is a very hard question to answer because I'm not
inside your head (thank God...) nor am I able to see you play.

Remember how to eat an Elephant.

That was a good question and a great answer.

I am guilty of making minor adjustments when down on the shot.

I'll put this into practice asap.

Thanks Randy

Oh, and the naps are for 1 hour.

John.

Power naps are a daily part of my life......

Hi,

I noticed that I'm twisting my cue slightly.. what is the best way to practise a straight pointing down wrist?

No one has asked this yet, so I'll give it a shot.

TOI

I haven't played anyone for the last 3 or 4 months, just been staying home practicing TOI everyday. Its an interesting style of play.

After spinning the QB for over 50 years it wasn't easy to change. Forcing the QB where you want it to go just went against everything I was taught and learned.

I like the finesse style of play.

I will say that TOI for me has allowed me to not fear using inside QB on shots.

I know you spent some time with CJ working on TOI. Could you please express your thoughts using this style of play.

I will say that for me TOI has its place in play and I plan on using it.

I'm 66 years old and have enjoyed the TOI experience. It has opened up some new doors for position play that I didn't realize existed.

Thanks for your input.

I don't take power naps. After I eat lunch........I don't have a choice, I'm going down for an hour. :)

In Pool School we address the problem by checking the cradle first. Tight grips turn! Having the proper Finish position will also help stop the twisting.
Hard to do anything without seeing it first.

Yes, I really enjoyed my time with CJ. I always learn so much when I'm open minded. CJ is a great guy.

I think it's all about where you are coming from.
If you never had a real strong grasp on aiming then TOI is the nuts.
I can teach several different aiming/operating systems so TOI was another
tool in my game. Too each their own.

I still use CTE and have put two TOI shots into my tool box.

Good luck with your entire learning process including TOI.

Time for a nap

Yeah, CTE.

Been waiting on Stan to release the new DVD.

I'll give it a shot. I'm sure I'll learn something.

A nap at 7:00pm..........whoa!!!!

You'll be up all night after that nap.

I'll apply an analogy to weight lifting. You can't go to the gym and lift random weights and expect results. You have to have a plan. An organized schedule. Track your progress.

Regarding pool, Is there a practice routine you recommend for maximum results? I'm talking about a well rounded game, not anything specific.

He's on your Ignore list too?

:p

-Sean <-- ok, ok, that was bad. :o

Oops, just found that he was Banned! And here I thought I was "making a funny" out of a word used by Randy that I thought he was using in a different context...

Oh well. :(

-Sean <-- hasn't been around much on AZB, and obviously missed a lot

Yes, for sure. With a person of your high skill level it would be imperative to keep your game smooth and in the "now" moment.

For myself it's a matter of making sure my 6 mandatory skills plus my 3 pre-shot routines are always in order.

Let's look at this first. Answer these questions to yourself.

How is my:
PROCESS (aka...mantra---self talk---timing & rhythm?)
DELIVERY (aka...Set-Pause-Finish?)
ALIGNMENT (aka...am I pointing at my target before & after the shot?)
ANGLE (aka...understanding a competent aiming system and the TL? CTE)
SPEED (do I have a base speed control system?)
SPIN (do I understand cue ball squirt at all distances and speeds? How are my stop shots?)
There are my 6 skills needed to play at a high level.

Next let's look at the 3 pre-shot routines needed to execute the game.

How are my?
THINK (this is our analytical time to make the correct choices)
SEE (this is our alignment & aiming time from the standing position)
DO (this is our execution phase...no thought what so ever. self talk)

Remember, practicing these is an analytical process. Building good habits to play with.

God, there is so much more,
maybe next time we meet.

tightness in my lower back muscle on the right side.

Kinda quiet this week end. No unintended English around.

Fire away. Ask me a question.

randyg

Hey there, Randy, thanks for offering your guidance and experience. I have a question that I need some help with.

I've been playing more lately and I feel a tightness in my lower back muscle on the right side. I'm pretty sure it's from breaking the balls, have you experienced this or what would you suggest I change in my stance/technique to take pressure off that muscle?

Naaaa, just your age.

Take two aspirin and post in the morning.

like a catapult delivery on the break shot - He does it extremely effectively

That's great advice Doc, thanks

I was working on something that Johnny Archer recommended in London .... like a catapult delivery on the break shot. He does it extremely effectively and I'm getting it down now - just remembered he said it bothered his back too for awhile. Anytime we try new movements/techniques it takes some getting use to, we're only human. ;)

Yup, ya got me, Pops. I walked right into that one! :o

-Sean <-- now is wondering to himself, "what in the world did Rick do to get banned?"

Ah, I found it, in his own "Pendulum stroke sweet spot" thread. No surprise, he OCD'ed himself to forum death in that one. I knew it was coming after my run-ins with him a while back -- it was just a matter of time.

Anyway, I'm sure there are many breathing breaths of fresh air after all that! Poor Randy, Scott Lee, Neil, nobcitypool, Tony_in_MD, Fran, et al.

Gosh, the drama we miss when we're away from the forums for a spell!

Now the "Ask the Instructor" subforum is back on track, and the title of this thread can be truly representative.

Could you explain how do YOU use CTE, how you align for different shots, how do you pivot etc.
