Lee Van Corteza vs Lo Li-Wen (LIVE)

Great action. Does anyone know if those brunswicks are 9 footers or
8 footers ? they look a little smaller than normal on the stream.

Hmm. Probably not just a coincidence there are so many top notch players
in Asia. They never wasted their time getting good on a bar box...

Thats part of it. But that's not the main reason. Taiwan and lately China train their players from a young age thus producing a lot of great talents. Another thing about Taiwan is that there's a lot of resources and its easy to find coaching and be matched up because its sucha a small place - same goes for Philippines too plus pool is part of the culture there.

I know what you mean. For the most part in the US pool is played as a recreation
more than as a sport. With a few exceptions many players in the U.S do not start playing until they start going to pool halls or bars. The first time I picked up a cuestick I was 19. Most of the top players in Asia probably started playing around age 10 or younger. My wife is from Taiwan so she was nice enough to get me matched up with a younger guy from Taiwan last year at the BCA tourney. It cost me a few bucks to see how well he played. I have told my wife I will find my own game this year :)

I grew up in Taiwan so I know the pool scene there really well. Instead of going to malls and smoking weed, the teens in Taiwan hang out at pool halls (during or after school :)) The thing is, any pool halls you go to, and there are plenty of them (used to be more), you will see run out pool in multiple tables. And if you befriend them, they will teach you for free or even play with you for free and that is how I learned. Took about one summer to go from a D+/C- player to a B-ish level player. There are not as many good players here, but when you do see one, their intentions are usually not good at least in my experience.

Very True. I have been to Taiwan about 6 times and one thing I have definitely noticed about the Taiwanese people is they are a lot more serious and passionate about what they are doing than Americans are. My wife and her two brothers all from Taiwan came to the USA to go to college. How strong is it when you can move across the planet to a completely different culture speaking just a little bit of English and Get Masters and Doctorate Degrees. Major discipline and Study habits. When I go there I am lucky to find an American style restaurant on my own. I'm not going to be signing up for any classes over there that is for sure. Work hard and reap the benefits - in pool and in life.

There certainly are a lot of positive traits of the Taiwanese culture, but there are also just as many non-hard working people there as well. There are plenty of hard working Americans too. The main difference is that in the American culture, many people settle, while in Taiwan many people want to get rich.

Just to give you an idea,
In the Philippines, pool table is everywhere, mostly 9' tables, you might see them in streets and even in the outskirts area, just ask Jay, he has been here many time doing commentaries for international pool events. Well for a $0.35/ game you can play pool with friend or if you want get some action for a minimal fee of $1-2.50 or more someone would play with you. The most popular game is is 15 balls Rotation, where in every ball counts as points, whoever gets to 60 or 61 points win. But 10 balls is becoming popular nowadays.
If i will recall Efren childhood days, as early as 11 years old he is already playing good, also he used to be a spotter in some money games played and their where he learned his skills, learning from the matches, Efren sleeps on top of the pool table, after getting up, he starts practising already, imagine trying to run out 15 ballls and manuevering in it. Needless to say, pool condition is humid, hot and they can still play well. I think thats the advantage of a Filipino pool player with any pool player around the world, he can play in any given condition. Unlike in US or Taiwan, i see them with alll the correct lighting, well ventilated condition.

As of today, still many younger generation still plays pool everywhere.

Last year, i have witness of Ronnie Alcano and Chang Jung Lin playing on a pool hall, condtion was hot and humid, is the first time Chang played in those condition even at rank no1, he has a hard time of adjusting to those condition, as Ronnie Alcano demolished him in a race to 17 for $500
