Pump, hope more share
The primary purpose for the ebony splicing is to make the cue heavier. More splicing, more heavier (depending on the length).
Hi
I think 3 splics of thicker ebony should be equal to or more heavier to 4 splices:grin:
Technically you are right. But most splice are overlapped.
Think about this, would a one splice be heavier than a 8 splices ebony of the same length?
Secondly, since most hand-spliced snooker cues are hand planed, it is a lot easier for snooker cue maker to square up evenly a four splices point than a 3 splices point. (It is not difficult to square up a three points.)
4 splices are symmetrical while 3 is not.
When a snooker cue is planned it is usually done with 2 ebony splices glued on the opposite sides then planned. 3 splices would be much more difficult to do because 3 splices are not symmetrical.
You can see some of my work on my web site if you like (http://www.auroracues.com/), I am making a cue with 6 splices atm but all my cues on my site have 4 splices.
It is not like you can just put 3 splices together than turn it round, you need to make the points even and nice. It is not as easy as it sounds unfortunately. lol
Structurally I think 4 is better but imo the difference is not that significant if the cue is well made.
