Hand size to shaft diameter mapping

I've always wondered if anyone has looked more technically at the appropriate shaft thickness vs hand size. (Obviously, any kind of conclusion or whatever we would have to hold with a big pinch of salt.). But this idea intrigues me as people have a wide range of hand sizes.

I don't know, maybe a stupid idea.

It just seems where are still in the Middle Ages in terms of a lot of shafts being of similar size.

But any opinions?

This is without a doubt the most obscene post I have ever seen here on AZ. Can you imagine. Asking about shaft size to hand size. In all my born days I have nev...What? He's talking about the size of one's hand relative to the handle on a pool cue? My Bad.

You are probably right tramp.

I guess this is what I'm thinking. I really liked ob classic. But they come standard in 12.75. Why that thickness? Companies make things to best fit the greatest market of their target audience. So if they make a 12.75 shaft as standard, they would apply to the median pool size hand. No necessarily my hand, your hand, or some other guys hand.

I don't know probably is a stupid idea. But I'm not talking about anything but someone to research it.

I myself used to build cues, and the only good reason that I know for the dimensions we see being used in pool cues is they have evolved to their current sizes, and have become acceptable.
If you were to have a cue custom made you could ask the cue maker to either enlarge the diameter of the butt, or reduce it. Same goes for length.
If you did this, however, you should know that changing the cue size might affect resale. :)
 
It has more to do with the taper on the shaft than hand size. OB and predator both make a pro taper shaft (314-2, ob1 & classic) and also a European taper (z2, ob2 & classic pro). The pro taper is 12.75 and euro taper 11.75. McDermott does the same with their ishafts.

As far as hand size go? Just try a bunch of different sizes til you find one that suits you best.
 
Golf grips: junior, ladies, under size, regular, over size, & jumbo.

Plus different layers of tape can be placed on the shaft to stretch the rubber to fill in the gaps.

Major league baseball players have custom bats or use a model that fits them.

Tennis rackets come in different sizes of 1/8 inch increments.

Your idea is not necessarily a bad one. It's just more difficult to put into play.

Bowling balls are drilled to fit one's hand & type of hold.

Pool is just so far behind almost eveyrthing.

It's also not so much the size of the hand as it is the type of bridge and how that bridge is formed. I have used a closed bridge for a good part of my life and favored a bit thicker ( 13.25mm or so, even for snooker ) shaft diameter as I felt it gave me greater control in my closed bridge. Lately though, I've been trying to ween myself down a bit on shaft diameter while using the open bridge more.

I'm all the way down to just over 13mm. :grin:
