Boston and New York accents are very different. When I moved down south some years back I recall being at a seminar and the speaker enlightened the audience that he was from the Nort East. Right away I asked him what part of Providence, RI he was from. Turns out he was from the Federal Hill section. Years later I bumped into him again at a function and I addressed him as " Federal Hill ". He couldn't believe I remembered him and he even remembered the incident. Long story short, Providence is forty miles south of Boston but the nasal twang of the Providence crew is a dead give away.
I've always identified that additional "R" as a Boston accent. I guess it's used in Upstate NY too. (I visit NYC often and I never hear it there)

Al is not from "upstate NY", he's actually from Queens. Queens, being NYC, of course...

You sure? I thought the Bronx but then i heard him say Manhattan and then to City Island-Bronx. I remember on Aug 31st 1997 he came into Fieldston Billiards on 234th or so and Broadway- extreme North Bronx and was the first to tell Me Princess Diana had died.
