Refinishing a cue that has painted on points

A friend wants me to refinish an old cue that he has, but it appears to have painted on points.It also has a snake skin wrap that was sealed in the finish. It has a lot of dings and chipped finish. What's the best way to get the old finish off without the painted points being removed? Thanks

Honestly, don't do it. You don't always have to say yes, especially if you are not sure of the outcome.
 
I can't see you getting the finish off without ruining the painted on points.
I think you might want to pass on that cue work.
 
If the cue has painted on points it is probably not even worth refinishing! If it is an issue of the cue being a good player then what it looks like after you strip it and refinish it should not matter. if he's keeping it for the playability! For example I would play with a turd if it played great regardless of what it looked like!
