Mr.Wayne I am a DIY kinda guy so I just ordered a Hightower lathe so I can learn about making cues. Are their guidelines I should follow to avoid becoming a copy cat? Clearly Evey cue I could conceive of building comes in some part from what I have seen before. How should I address this.

Bunk, you guys all play too loose with the truth. I made the prototype to this above-described cue 10 years ago and told my buyer that it was a one-of-kind, never to be repeated. But if anybody else wants one, just call me up on the ringy-ding.....but don't tell anyone. ;)

to Mr. Wayne

Thomas Wayne, being the creative genius he is, spun a tale weaved of lies and deceit in an effort to discredit my character and integrity.

The facts you are about to read don't work very well for Thomas's story, so he intentionally left them out. His story only works when he tells a partial account and then attempts to use his revised version against me.

My wife, Lynn, and I attended the 1992 BCA Trade Show in Kansas City. While attending the show, a west coast cue dealer told me of a "newbie" cue maker named Thomas Wayne.. Him and I had multiple cue deals so he thought I might be interested in taking a look at his cues. That afternoon, he brought Lynn and I to his booth and he made the introduction.

Thomas was an unknown quantity but we liked his work and decided to take a chance. We selected 5 cues, with the understanding we would pick them up and pay at the end of the show. Thomas said a deposit wasn't necessary since this dealer made the introduction.

Thomas requested to keep the cues on display so other attendees could see his work. When we returned to pick up our cues, Thomas sold our cues with no explanation and no apology.. The one remaining cue was "The Disintigrating Cue". There have been numerous instances I have "invested" in "newbie" cue makers. Thomas was the first cue maker to blatantly lie,and not keep his word. This was very disappointing and really made us angry to say the least.

Thomas shared his story how it took 3 attempts to complete "The Disintigrating Cue ". The first attempt "exploded" in the lathe. During the second attempt he reached a point of frustration and in a moment of anger pulled it out of the lathe, "smashing it to smithereens around the shop.".
1 small piece survived. The third attempt was successful and a few years later featured in the Billiard Encyclopedia and Blue Book of Pool Cues. Thomas commented he had so much trouble building this cue, he would never build another.

I never claimed to anyone at anytime I "commissioned " this cue or was involved in the design. Thomas Wayne was unknown to me until we met in 1992. I have been quoted as saying "The Disintegrating Cue" transformed cue making into " Cue Art Form".

Thomas continues his lies with "I made up a false story to hopefully make a big score".

The truth is a very prominent collector approached us with a substantial cash offer. Based upon what we paid, we could have easily made 30-40 times profit. We declined the offer.

Long after the second "Disintegrating Cue" was built and sold, a friend and fellow collector saw the cue. Thinking it was mine, he contacted me to see if I sold.. I was very surprised to hear a second cue was built because of what Thomas said in 1992.

I did call Thomas to ask "If you built one 'Mona Lisa' why duplicate it ?" Thomas did say this collector had been asking for a couple years to build the cue and he eventually agreed. I told him the offer I turned down and wished him well.

Looking back over the years, Periodically, a strange phenomenon occurs between cue collectors and cue makers..... , We marvel at their skills and artisan abilities. Some cue makers have that magical ability to transcend dreams into reality. Unfortunately, sometimes I have made the mistake of transferring those remarkable skills into character traits.

Thomas is an excellent example that demonstrates, that the ability to build creative cues does not coincide with a person's integrity. There are some cue makers who continue to lie and cheat, deceiving themselves and their customers. The acceptance of this behavior is pathetic. Some collectors, cue makers and dealers are willing to sell-out and disregard professionalism just to
have the "chance" of maybe owning a certain cue or having a particular collector as a client.

Back in 1978, when I first got into this business, a very successful person described the Billiard Industry as "A group of people that love to hate each other." Time has proven this to be true. Too bad it continues....

Thomas Wayne's lies, wrongful accusations, and public slander with incomplete information do nothing positive for anyone. His small mind feeds his big ego. How unfortunate a person like Thomas Wayne with such talent and genius continues to behave with wreck-less abandonment resorting to lies and deception in an attempt for what?

Regarding your irrelevant comments about New York.... again you intentionally leave out all the facts...... Anyways, I corrected my challenges with alcohol..... AND YOU ?? Here it is 21 years later and Thomas Wayne continues to lie, cheat , and deceive.....By his own definition Thomas Wayne is a "FOOL"..... perhaps he is a fool's idea of a fool.

That conversion with the Asian collector - who told me you wanted $30,000 for the cue, and described the claims you made about it - was witnessed by several other ICCS guest and exhibitors. We were all out to dinner, and sitting at a crowded table, so most of the conversations that night involved virtually everyone at the table. Of course, I can only go by what the collector told us, but even with the partial language barrier I would take his word over yours on pretty much any subject in the world, Mark.

And of course the only two people involved in our subsequent phone conversation were you and me, so you can twist THAT any way you like - but you and I both know the truth.

HOWEVER that does leave one glaring gap in the story. If what I posted is all "lies", then what could your partner Joe have been referring to in his earlier attack on me - if not the ONLY cue of mine that could possibly fit his/your BS scenario?

Oh, and one last thing Mark - my wife wanted me to ask if you were ever going to be able to repay us the $180 for that room at the NY Athletic Club where you slept off your drunken stupor - she gave up directly trying to get you to come through years ago. I told her I very much doubt it, but did promise I'd ask.

Submitted without even the slightest pretense of respect,
Thomas Wayne
