Straight in shots

I just got down on my table and noticed when I shoot harder my wrist will twist Inside. ( my thumb will go from pointing down to pointing at the side of my body. How do I fix this?

OK, good observation. Now your problem can be fixed. I hope you take my advice because I can help you.

Set up a straight-in shot and take your thumb and index finger of your grip hand completely off the cue. Let them hang down straight towards the ground without touching the cue. Then shoot the shot. Make sure they are still pointing down after you've shot the shot.

This is just an exercise, so don't panic. Keep shooting that way until you can successfully pocket the ball several times in a row.

Then you can slowly start to place both fingers back on the cue VERY LIGHTLY.

If you start to twist again, take them off and do the exercise again.

You need to learn how it feels to shoot straight and your first two fingers are preventing you from doing that.

Trust me. I know what I'm talking about.

1000

The way I fixed this problem was to go to the pool table and shoot 1000 long straight shots. Each shot taking the same pre-shot routine, and with the same mental concentration.

I have done the 1000 shots. (Not whiskey). And that's all. no playing matches or for $
It took me about a week. After I was done it was like a new stroke. Tennis players
Hit thousands and thousands of forehands etc. To get consistency a and to be accurate.
There are muscles in in the eyes that need to be trained to move and focus as well as
The arm and so on. Having coached, not pool,
I am a believer in focused practice on one thing at a time until it becomes second nature
Yes. That kind of work can be extremely boring hitting the same shot for a week or more
But I will tell you if it's the money ball and it's a long straight shot. I like my chances..
Now I just have to improve the other aspects of the game
Mcp

Vision and aim is not the problem it is stroke and ultimately where the tip hits cb. This is because for straight in shot your pocket is large that if the ob at center of table, so the margin of error for aim is big. if you miss alwayse the same way it is definetly not aim. So if tip hit to right, left, top bottom , squirt and swerve will change cb direction. IMO no need for concentration at all.

Another issue the ob and cb are not 100% set up straight , bend over and make sure before you shoot

Another thing that helped me was if it is truly a straight in shot look past the object ball and aim to shoot cue ball center pocket. Object ball will get in the way and fall in the pocket.

fastone371, sorry bud, you are right 96%, my tip due to the bad back swing strike CB off center. You the man.

I guess Ill take 96%. Thats better than my poker game. I was going for 3 jacks but only came up with 2, it was then I discovered that I was just "one jack-off":embarrassed2:

Said 96% because at higher elevation a hole in cloth, dirty tabel tip might alter cb direction again I was wrong before who knows

When I try to shoot mid - long range straight in shots the same thing always happens. The cueball will go to my left and the object ball will go to the right. I'm a right handed player and was curious if anyone had this problem?

On the golf course, I used to fade my long irons to the right. I'll offer the same advice my pro gave me after an hour of trying to give me a reliable fix..........."Aim left"

Agree, I did it and doing some, however, this will be a variable aim target depending on cb to ob distance and ob to pocket distance. Doable and not very hard, but tough to master on straight or any shot, especially when considering English, squirt, swerve, throw you name it.
TOI is good for the OP on straight shots and others too

I like this simple drill that makes you practice the fundamentally most important element of consistent ball pocketing, a straight stroke. Uses all 16 balls and you can make it harder or easier depending on how long you make the first shot. Set up a stop shot, 2-3' and then use the cued ball as your next ball to pocket. Each shot gets 2.25" longer as you go along. See video:

My best at this drill so far, a 149. I was going to quit at 150 and bobbled the last ball?! Anyway, the goal is a DEAD stop on every shot. This is actually beautiful if you can do it on every shot. I strive for that perfection in execution.

I do something similar. All shots are 2-3 diamonds apart.

1. 15 stop shots.
2. 14.1 practice
3. 15 follow shots
4. 14.1 practice
5. 15 draw shots
6. 9 ball ghost
