A better question would have been, I have $50-150 to spend on a cue for the local pub.

But, to answer your question; Players Pure X cues are great for the money. A lot of members here used them as their main players.

Do a search on here for "HXT" or look in the review section. There should be some stuff on Pure X also in a search.

Short version, yes they are good cues.

which shaft are you using?

The Pure X comes with one type of shaft, although they have two different diameters. If you like a closer to a regular shaft, get the thicker one. If you want less deflection (closer to a Predator), get the thinner. I use an HXT shaft on my cue but with a custom 12.5mm diameter from the 12.75.

My son has the skinny version of the shaft, that plays very nicely too, but I found that it's too small for my burnisher on the tip tool I have.

You may want to buy a Lucky McDermott cue with a Players HXT (Pure X) shaft with a 3/8x10 pin. Because many good higher end cues have the 3/8x10 joint, when you get to wanting a higher end cue, you can just re-use the same shaft you are used to. The Lucky butt is about as nice a US McDermott butt, but the HXT shaft is a lot better than the Lucky shaft. You may never need to switch shafts for the rest of your playing days, may as well pick up a shaft pin that can work on many cues.

The Players cues have a 5/16 x 18 joint, even for the wood to wood models.
