Like someone said earlier, in a lot of sports events, the organizers like to give the host country a bonus to boost local interest and generate ticket sales. If the event requires qualification, then they will often give an automatic qualification to the host country, like the FIFA World Cup. If there is no qualification (i.e. invitational) then you will often see the host country be allowed to enter an extra player/team into the tournament.
FYI, the World Cup of Pool has been giving the host country 2 teams since it started in 2006.

Why does the UK get 2 teams in this event while everyone else only get 1 team entry

It's because one English team has been called victim #1 by Earl!

So in theory if I have a card game at my house, I can play 2 hands against everyone elses 1 hand??? It amounts to the same thing..... They have 2 chances to win the money and title just because they are the host country
