Pro Player Teaching?

I wasn't exactly sure what to call this thread title but please read on and then offer some feedback.

So, next semester at school I plan on captaining and spearheading the foundation of a real pool team at my University. I got the league players more serious about pool and now they're kind of versed in pro pool players and they're improving pretty fast (still nobody at University can beat me) ;)

Anyway, in forming a team (namely to compete against other schools) we receive a bit of money from the school but that money cannot go towards things like tables, or better cues because they'd have to be accessible to the largely-ignorant bangers at the University and it'd be a waste to buy quality cues when any student who wishes can pick it up and use it.

So, with a bit of money I figure it would be best to have a pro player come down and teach, instruct, and then whoop our asses =P The league guys have suggested Justin Hall and Corey Deuel and Alex Pagulayan. Probably because they're closest to our age.

But, I was just wondering how feasible this idea is and if somebody knew how to contact these guys for more information and possible cost estimates. Again, this won't be until next semester at best but it's something I'd like to put into action now.

Thanks everybody,

-Richard

pro player teaching

I understand your idea, and you will probably get suggestions along these lines;
however, my own personal experience with getting a pro-level player to teach me has not been very positive. I am just saying that just because a pro is good at shooting pool, does not mean he is a good teacher. Others here may suggest pros who are good teachers; it's just that I haven't experienced much success with it. That said, if I lived in the NY area, I wouldn't mind paying Earl for a few lessons, just to see what his methods are.

I do believe there are quite a few great pool instructors that are not pro pool players.

I had planned on getting Scott to come down and I've talked to him about coming to Chicago before just never had the funds. He's definitely high up on my list of people to contact!

A few months ago I watched Scott give a lesson. He is not only professional, but he clearly has the communication skills to to help people understand exactly what he is saying.

I'm sure your funds are limited so having the pros you mentioned coming there wouldn't go very far. Gene Albrecht is a stone's throw away and the cost of their travel time and per diem expenses cannot be overlooked. Scott Lee is obviously an excellent instructor and travels about the country regularly.

Given it is a start up college program, you might also want to contact Mark Wilson. He is within reasonable driving distance and may consider helping out.

Where in Chicago are you in? I know quite a bit of good players that can teach, I am not bad at teaching myself.

What are you wanting to learn? A pro will be expensive. A certified BCA instructor will be just as good since they do video analysis ect however will also be expensive depending on the time you need.

What speed are you and your team at? What speed do you want to be afterwards? I know people that go to billiard schools and learn with the best only to slightly improve since they dont have the work ethic to improve at the game.

Personally I think a one time lesson like that is a waste of money. Not to discredit some pros that run clinics, like Nick Varner and some others but what I saw from those guys was a waste. All they really do is talk about stuff and don't really get players involed to much while they teach.

What you really need is a coach that will spend some time with everyone and help them improve over time by spreading knowledge along the way.

PM if you want to talk about stuff more. I would love to help a school program get started in the game, I think its great.

call redshoes in alsip, and ask for lavin......jeff carter goes in there alot (or at least he did couple years ago) and i think he did a pool academy thing for a while up in wisconsin, and he is definitely pro level player. Lavin can get you in touch with jeff, or lavin himself is a good choice, and super nice guy, he's also a bca certified instructor (pretty sure)....

The OP is located in Northern Wisconsin attending school. So, Chicago folks it would not work out.
