I think I wrote about this very cue a little bit ago in some thread on AZ. I was quite sure it was lost to history. It is nothing special, just an old true sp Scruggs; however out of all of the cues I've owned over the years this was always my favorite. Time to buy lotto ticket lol.
I haven't seen this cue for over 15 years! And just by chance I was in one of my properties today that I haven't lived in for 9 years looking for something totally unrelated and stumbled upon this - WOOHOO!!!!!!
Ok, now the bad. It is only the butt as I snapped the shaft at Jack & Jills many years ago. Doesn't matter to me though cause it was just like running into my long lost best friend that had been missing in action for 15 years.

Now tough part; and I am open to anyone's opinion that would like to share. I WILL be putting this cue back in action so do I source an original TS shaft from somewhere OR go see Bob to make me a replacement. No biggie as im happy to have to make that decision:)

Tuning shafts is the last thing a cuemaker ever wants to hear.... I have had 2 cuss me to my face when I asked... If you have the coveted butt buy an engineered shaft and have someone competent tune it to the old scruggs characteristics... May take a trip or 4 but it will be worth it...

If the cue is from 79' to 88'. it might have been made by Bob Frey ( or at least the inlay work ). The original shaft could have been made by Mike Cochran.
I would take it to Bob and have 2 shafts made for sure. Bob's done all my work for over 20 yrs and is a true " custon cue maker ".
Tim comes down to Bob's shop quite a lot now. He might remember the cue.
Good luck and a great find.

Ren, good point I didn't really think about that im still excited about finding it. This is my dilemma - I would 100% prefer an old original Scruggs shaft. The issue I have with that is I always like to test hit with something before I pop so that would exclude online purchase. I may be able to get Bob to male one because of two reasons : im not really in any hurry cause I do have a bunch of other cues including my current player ( my $15 pawn shop find that last time I played - maybe 6 months ago that I played best pool of my life with ) and im very close friends with Bobs distributors for over a decade so that may help if I go that way.

Also, in regards to to have one tuned I took that as referring to an LD? I really dont care for LD'S so I will def be staying old school so if I have anyone make a shaft I'd really like it to be Bob cause I love his cues and he prob made the original on this cue anyway lol. On a side note I am planning on him making me a custom just as soon as I can narrow down the 30 ideas I have :). But thank you for your input and suggestion.

Amen brother! Funny I have same pic on my phone right now, I think I got it from JAM. As far as the age not exactly sure but I do have somewhat of a timeframe. Its been awhile but I got it at Jack & Jills around 98 or 99 and when I got it it was already WELL used. If I had to take a guess prob from late 80's to early 90's. Don't remember but its one or the other, either I won it after busting someone out or I paid like $20 bucks for it - literally so I basically have nothing in it so I dont mind spending some chez on the shaft.

On a side note, let me clarify about me saying I snapped the shaft. Not that I haven't snapped many of cues in many ways but this one was different. When I got it it had a cracked ferrule already. I hit some balls with it but it played amazing soni started playing with it - for quite awhile actually.. Well one night I was playing Eddie Bow-Legs from Running Out ( & The Block lol Ritchie:) ) for $1000 a set and I broke and shaft exploded on me!!!!

Not sure what you mean by "tuning" the shaft, but I know there are one or two guys out there who can reproduce the taper because they either have the original equipment, or can program the measurements into a cnc. Failing that you can simply get an original shaft or buy a Frey shaft, which is pretty damn close from what I hear. To the OP, I'm glad you found your long lost friend!

Now lets see a pic of that cue!

Here was my old one, never should have sold it...

Thanks! As a third choice yo what I've posted I understand that Leon Sly got the equipment out of Timmy's shop so is he the one u are referring to? I've known Leon for about 20 years but we haven't spoken recently but he did build one of my best friends a $2k monster not too long ago so maybe ill call just to say hi lol.

Now as to the pics, not gonna happen. I've tried many times with no luck. I've had Mr Wilson try to help with it and no luck. It seems that my device is not compatible with this website. Everytime I go to manage attachment sections when its time to enter jpeg file name or photobucket address it will not let me type ANYTHING in those spaces??? I've resigned myself to just going the Deano route lol :). Maybe one day! When there's something I really wanna post up insend it to JAM and she posts for me - THANKS AGAIN JAM u b awesome!

Stop Messing Around

Just send the entire cue to a competent cue-maker.....have him refinish the cue and make you some shafts......do it right.......the Forum will come up with cue-makers to consider but I'm telling you that Bob Owen does magic with pool cues.......the refinish Bob performed on an old Shurtz cue I acquired which also included changing the joint from piloted steel to flat ivory, the cue came back to me looking like a brand new cue. Just send the cue to Bob, or another talented cue-maker, and you won't be disappointed. I've heard that Proficient Billiards does a great job on refinishing cues but I've never used them.

I sent you a PM on this. Also if you have a smartphone, Tapatalk is a super easy way to post pics that you take with your phone.

In reference to Matt's post --- Does the cue even need a full refinish?? I sold mine to a guy and he refinished it. IMO, the cue should have been left alone with it's battle scars. It was playable, and looked bad-ass. I might be in the minority here, but I thought it was wayyyy cooler in its (cosmetically) beat up condition.

Im right there with you about the battle scars - I love them. This particular cue will never get refinished, maybe another cue possibly and if I were worried about value but not this one.

As to the tapatalk couple things; I have a windows phone so dont know if it would be compatible ( I run across quite a few things that are not for whatever reason - I know Microsoft just came out and all but it has been around for at least a year now ). Secondly I dont recall specifics right this second but I remember reading on AZ how some really dudnt care for it. I will do some more research on it though thanks.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.
