The Flying Elbow

I noticed last night that my elbow sort of flew out to the side a little when I was shooting. I am going to get my old VHS camcorder out tonight and film myself shooting to see how I look. I haven't done that in a while so maybe I will be able to pick up on something.

Hopefully I am sort of halfway close to a pendulum type stroke and the elbow being pushed out a little last night isn't the norm.

Any of you knowledgeable posters/instructors have any tips on how to keep that elbow in versus it flying out?

Flying elbow sounds amazing! At least what I'm picturing sounds amazing. I say keep it. Don't let anyone dull your sparkle.

Could be a number of things. May be too square on for you personally or too side on to cause it to jut out. Its most definitely an initial alignment issue. Without footage its hard to say. It could also be because you don't have enough clearance of the hips for the cue. Video would be helpful.

No, don't really think so. Plus its during the stroke that it seems to rear its ugly head.

Anyway, got the camcorder out tonight and did some filming. I could see the elbow get out there a little so I focused on keeping the hand going up to the chest. I think I am a lot better now.

Plus I noticed I still have a little elbow drop but at this point I am not going to worry about it since its not too bad.

If your alignment was spot on and gave your elbow room to stay fixed and the forearm enough room to swing freely then your elbow wouldn't jut out. If the elbow was out initially by a little then its your alignment...
