Joint protecters- Are to protect your pin from a drop while taking your cue out of the case.. What if you drop it just after you removed your joint protecters?? (I understand their use during transport)

The Uni-loc joint- Why is the speed in which you screw & unscrew your cue important? It's not like you have to fight someone with it after every shot.. A regular pin takes what 3 seconds longer to screw & unscrew? You screw it together play a 45 min match WTF?!?!?

Joint protectors - they don't do much protecting but the custom ones look really cool. It starts getting ridiculous when you start worrying about scratching your expensive joint protectors, though. Does anyone make joint-protector-protectors?

Uni-lock joint - The only use I can see is for those emergencies when you need to pack up and get the heck out of the joint real quick, such as after laying down an air barrel or when the wife calls.

Never thought of it this way...haha

I was going to post an opinion, but I'll never top your post
about either of the two subjects...lol, good post. Front runner
for post of the year in my opinion:)

There was a time here on AZ with guys would post that they ordered custom j/p's,
when they were done the jaypeemaker would post pics, then the owner would post
pics, then start another thread showing pics of the j/p's on the cue.
Minimum of four threads per set of j/p's
J/p's do protect the joint and the shaft collars, but it was really ridiculous around here for a couple of years.

As far as the Unilock joint...that was really funny, I laughed

I dont like joint protectors, never have, but the new cue cases are very deep
to handle longer cues now. I have a porper case and the shafts and the butts
disappear, cant get'em out, so...joint protectors.
Uni-lock is good for break-jump joints, thats all I can see.

I guess the Uni-lock is convenient when at a tournament and your putting your cues away after ever match. There on both my predators. It wasn't intentional it just happens the roadline and bk3 only come that way.

Joint protectors have become less about protection and more about cue bling lol I had a monster Scruggs that were ivory with sterling silver inlays that I didn't want to damage but they were probably a couple hundred dollar addition.

JP's. The lid of my case was open and the cues/shafts hit the (cement) ground when I was putting the case in the car. The JP's did their job. They got scratched/damaged but saved the cues. I use the cheap plastic ones.
I like UniLoc for no special reason. Just like it. Also aftermarket UniLoc shafts interchange and fit well.

Ditto,
Anyone can get in a hurry and forget to close the lid right on a case that has a zipper. I saw a really good player do just that. He is really particular about his cues and I ve never seen him mad but he got close then.

If I don't have a joint protector I use a wine cork that I put a hole in, cheap works great.

A little while ago, someone posted a great reason for the joint protectors.
I'd like to give credit but don't remember who it was.

All the other cool guys that are "players" have them, they are taking out their cue with 4 shafts, picking over which shaft to use, unscrewing the joing protectors, putting them away. You don't want to be the only guy without them not doing that do you?

As to the pin getting damaged from the time you take them off to the time you put the shaft one, if you are worried, off, just leave them on and use a house cue to play with.

You say you like to use the cork eh?

Well ... prepare to understand.

1. The joint protectors. Screwing over the male thread protects your case by preventing the threads from going into it.

Threading the protector into the female end protects your shaft from the lint in your case going into it.

Now for your second quandary ... the uni lock joint.

You must still be young, great shape, girls fight over you.... Well the older you get, the more your wrist gets a workout, these joints are made to give us old guys a wrist break.:killingme:

I never worried about dropping my cue, I'm not that spastic. It was all John Barton's fault I started using JP's. I bought a JB case and my fat little fingers had a hard time reaching the cue. They cue was hard to get out because they were in deep and the interior held them nice and snug. Too bad JB is not here to answer for his crime.

Actually, that right there is an excelent reason, a regular 29" shaft, in many cases will be in all the way in a case. Without JPs on it, you'll either need to shake it out or thread it a bit with your cue and pull it out.

I am sure this will annoy all the "old school" pool players but...

I like uni-loc joints, hybrid cues, low deflection shafts, etc. I don't care if it only saves me a third of a second putting my cue together. I think whoever came up with uni-loc did a pretty decent job on the design and execution so I actually count that as a positive feature when looking at a potential new cue.

And you can bet that if a laser-guided, google glass enabled, brain implant aiming device comes out I'll be on that like a rabid dog.

You now know my plan!

You have discovered my plan to conquer the aiming world one google lover at a time!

Road, you bring up an interesting point. Why do we use joint protectors when it really isn't necessary.
I think, what really goes to the heart of the matter is the more fundamental issue of why, and how, joint protectors came into being in the first place. I always thought that joint protectors actually protected the joint from physical harm. Dings, nicks, burrs, and so on.
However, as we begin to look more closely at the protectors themselves we see that.........my phone is ringing. I'll be back in a minute.

Uni-lock is only useful when you need to unscrew your jump/break stick from a break stick to a jumper.
Says the guy with an old viking with a joint that takes a minute to screw together.
