Hows this for a Tournament Idea:

You pick a date as a Start Date and a date as a close date.

During this time you allow people to come in an register and play as they want. They come in at popular times when people/players will be there and play matches. They have a scoresheet and you record wins and losses.

They pay their entry and they play as many matches with different people as they want.

You keep the wins/losses and score on a scoresheet set up for each player. At the end of the time period you assemble all of the scoresheets and you tally up the win/loss average.

You look at the win loss average vs how many matches were completed.

You have a minimum amount of matches you have to play in order to place lets say

8th thru 12th and those people have a shot at those spots

Say you play 4 matches....after...7 matches you have a shot at 7th thru 5th and after 10 matches you have a shot at 4th thru 1st.

This would keep the action going all weekend and all you would have to do is post up the scoresheets and call the people who placed for the winnings.

You could even have a sore losers bracket that would occur if a loser of lets say 12 thru 8 wanted to risk all of their winnings to challenge someone in a higher placement in the tournament. Which could go on the following Friday Night!

The tournament drags on and brings in more business!

Hows that sound for action!

Would you play?

Sounds to me like you would have a lot of people lying, and/or accusing others of lying...

Maybe and Drama fuels Action! Like Nascar!

Possibly Maybe and Drama means..... People are Involved, People Involved...sounds like Nascar, People Love some Nascar and Pool League for that matter.

So maybe thats a good thing! You have peoples Attention!

I've seen something similar a few years back. It does work and presents great business for the house. A good handicap system will cater for those who choose to lay down. And in serious cases the money does not need to be paid out and the tournament can re-start, eliminating those who are cheating. This can all be clearly stated in the printed rules before a ball is potted.

I see it more of a weekly league for individuals rather than a tournament - but that's just word play

I'd be interested if only I was in the local area

Well if that be the case....

Who pays all this extra table time or is the room owner just giving it away,
while all these tables are tied up so he can't make money from his regular
customers ???
--------------

Well if that be the case then the room is full and the room owner doesn't need to worry about getting people in to drink, eat and play the jukebox...so it shouldn't be a problem. Most tournaments have a green fee for the house. I would hope the house would run it and therefore deserve a green fee.

If the play takes place on tables in view of the bar and the match sheet are obtained from the house, people are in the know of who is playing who and what the spot is for a handicap. This wouldnt be a high dollar affair likely a $ 25 or $30 tournament for mostly fun which wouldnt promote a lot of cheating.

If you start getting some unrealistic results from some of the matches those will likely average out in the long term. I cant imagine that you wont find out if someone starts asking people to skew the games or matches won. If someone does that, you will find out and you dont let them back in ever and you state that much in the paperwork before it begins.

Its a small amount in the pot, its about having fun if people cross the line with it cut them off.

I understand. The idea of an individual league works better IMO because all players play each other once or twice (leagues decision) so they get real value for money over the weeks. This should reflect in entry fees so the house is happy too. Prizes can be 1st-3rd or just 1st place winner takes all

I understand where you're coming from, and that you're trying to eliminate the rigid schedule that most tournaments have, but I personally don't think this format would do very well.

Everyone in the tournament should have a chance to get first place, however this format still favors the person who has the most time to devote to the tournament. The amount of matches you are able to play directly correlates to your chances of winning the tournament.

The amount of matches you are able to play depends on how early you enter the tournament, how much time you are able to devote to the tournament, and how many people are willing and able to play you.

Since there is no system in place to match people up, you are leaving that up to the people themselves. That means they can refuse to play certain people, and strategically play people they feel they have an advantage over. Even if there is handicapping involved, this would still be an issue. This means some people will easily be able to find matches while others won't.

Everyone does not have to play everyone else. As long as they get a certain number of matches in, they can avoid certain players and still win.

I don't think the lack of money in the pot, or your assertion that it's just "for fun" is an excuse for any flaws in the tournament format.

It's my opinion that a ladder system would be the best way to have an ongoing tournament without the time constraints and scheduled matches of regular tournaments. Then you have a challenge system in place in which you have to play people higher than you to advance, and you can't deny people lower than you the opportunity to challenge. People who are rightly challenged have a time frame to schedule a match, and if they don't comply they forfeit. The incentive to challenge other players would be a time frame before the "session" ends and top players are paid out.

I hear ya there I got your post.

The reason I liked the Tournament Premise rather than the whole league thing is COMMITTMENT. I hate having to be somewhere each week at the same time and there are a lot of people who are fine with competition, fine with the fee and not fine with showing up each week at a certain time. They are also fine if they dont make the top spots because they only played 4 or so matches.

What I think some of these people are wanting is to be included........not be told what to do all the time....easy come easy go and get to play and compete against other players without having to match up for $$. They are just regular guys who have more going on than Pool.

I think there is a market here of people that want to be part of the Pool Culture but who are essentially being ignored. Im one of those myself.

I would play. For me, it doesn't take much. This structure does seem more fitting for a league though.

You do not need a specific time or night. players involved share their email / phone details and they can decide when and at what time they play. Convenience IS THE KEY USP! The house can receive their payment from fees up front and can choose to play all matches Sun-Thurs to avoid weekend foot fall

If there are no brackets and you play whoever you want to play, it's easy to game the system. If there are 100 total players, and me and nine friends are players, they also simply lose to me. I'm now 9-0 which I doubt any legitmate player is going to be. I win; me and my friends split up the pot and each of us makes about double/triple our entry fee (depending on your payout percentage).

I would be interested in something like this. I like anything that matches me up against someone at the pool table.

That is not new they play like that in Europe in their clubs. The tournaments last a month or two among the members. We played a straight pool tournament here once like that. The matches were scheduled but could easily be changed to accommodate players. Matcher were all witnessed and when they agreed to play an official was always there.

You know years ago they player world tournaments sort of like that. They would play for months in different cities culminating in a show down final.

You sound like you may know, what is a pyramid tournament? When I used to go to Europe I would see the boards in many pool rooms. I think it takes like a month or two to play one. They seemed popular.

I agree, I played in a league like this and I had a hard time getting people to play. Heck, sometimes they were there doing nothing and still wouldn't play. I also saw where some of the better players would only play the weaker ones. By the end of the league quite a few of the stronger players, that knew they couldn't win, dropped out. Which meant that these other guys would only have to play the weaker players. It could have just been the league but I didn't particularly care for it.

Thats pretty solid I like it!

Railbird I concur, you are right its a better format for the kind of thing I would like to do.
