Just a quick story and question. A few months ago,I went to a buddy of mine's pool

hall and shot around for a while.He knows that I have a Diamond polisher.and asked

if I would care to run them all through the cleaner.So,I did so and the very next day I went

back early in the morning,now this is the time all of the Bank Pool players come in.

As soon as the first ball was shot one of the older guys (60's) or so,said "What the

HELL happened to these balls"! I said I just ran them through and cleaned them with

the Simonis cleaner.There was about 10 older players and they all walked out!!!Said they

wouldn't be back until the balls were back like they were! Are you f'ing kidding me I said?

So what are the thoughts from all you Bank players? Does it really screw things up

for you ? I personally don't play any bank,only 8 or 9 ball.

I never took my polisher back up there and that was 5-6 months ago.

Sorry if I put this in the wrong forum or if it's a dumb question.

I just wanted a explanation from folks I feel are a very intelligent group for the most part.

Freshly polished balls definitely throw and twist differently. A lot of banks are no longer makeable.

Yes, the friction between the balls and between the balls and rails changes, which changes all the bank angles.

If you want to really mess with the banks players, clean the balls and recover the tables. They'll run out screaming. :eek:

I asked them"holy hell you guys have never even played with a new

a new or clean set"? I clean the balls on my table at least once a week or

it runs me crazy.

Thanks for the replies you guys. That's why I hang out here n do a lot

of reading. Always plenty of knowledge to be found once u sift through the

bullshit that happens here from time to time.

So do you guys like playing where everything including the balls are kept

clean or do you prefer clean cloth only?
 
I play a lot of bank pool and do not like polished balls and new cloth. I do not mind if the balls are wiped clean, but I do not like them polished.

Many of the tables at the Derby City Classic have new cloth and polished balls when you get there on Thurs before the bank pool tournament starts on Fri. It is a constant adjustment from Thurs practice and throughout the tournament as the tables get play and the balls and cloth get dirtier. I would much rather play the Bank Pool event after the One Pocket and 9 Ball when the tables have been broken in.
 
If it makes that much difference the they should really consider doing just that. I

Had no idea it was that big of a deal but as I said, I'm certainly not a banker

and not really that much better at 8 or 9 ball. Lol but I do thoroughly enjoy the game!

As others have said here it makes the balls play different. There is less friction between the balls and rails making it near impossible to use english on some banks.

Personally, I wouldn't get all up in arms over it but to each his own I guess. I actually prefer playing on broke in cloth with unpolished balls.

Believe it or not, I hated playing at DCC under those "perfect" conditions because I had NO experience playing with clean equipment. The pool rooms I frequented never cleaned the balls and only cleaned the nappy, rubber backed cloth once a week.

It was a dramatic change for me going to Derby. It was like learning how to play all over again.

I vacuum and damp wipe my table and balls every day. I think that's far preferable for all games, except maybe banks. You can do a lot more in a banks game with sticky balls and cloth, if you have the experience. That's a big if.

Derby is real tough because of the "new" conditions...
Most of us shoot on tables with cloth that is 6 months to a year old and balls that haven't been cleaned in a year.. Now move to a table that is sliding all over and the balls have to be all cut thinner to make and see how your game is..
The game is tough enough without having to "aim" every shot and try to figure out where to adjust.

I always try to play with polished balls and new cloth on my Diamond ProAm for at least two months before Derby.. Too soon and the cloth starts to break in and too late, and I don't get my mind to completely obey me.... :)

I think the order of events is also tough... With Banks first, nothing twists, everything goes; but some crazy banks can be accomplished because of the slipperiness..
If I had my druthers, I'd like to see 9 ball first, then Banks, then One Pocket..

The one pocket they brought out a brand new set right before my match. The balls were noticeably covered with dust immediately. I had a very hard time adjusting and both of us had several skids during our match that cost us games. The banks would just slide off the rails. Very difficult for me as i have never played under those conditions.

Sure they do......and so do bad players..

Let's change the conditions every shot and see who can play the best..or... let's try to standardize things a bit and bring the level of play higher.

I don't care what I play on as long as I have a bit of time to adjust.

Kind of like Windows 8.... Everyone who has used a PC for the last 30 years can't find their way around anymore. (good pc users will adjust) :)
