apa 8 b rule question

My bar banger buddy insists the cue ball must travel a minimum of 3inchs, or he makes me shoot again, I've miscued before and won the game because of this "rule"
http://www.poolplaying.com/8ballrules.htm

I don't see anything there about 3 inchs,
So is there such a rule?

Interestingly I did not know jumping was a foul

Also he likes to try and hook me when I'm on the 8 by shooting the cue ball and hoping it'll freeze to the rail, hitting noting else in the process, is that legal as well?
Or don't you have to hit your ball then a rail?

If this is an APA rule question, there's no 3 inch rule, jumping LEGALLY (not scooping) is well within the rules, if you jump by intentionally miscueing that's bad, and to shoot a legal shot in the APA you must hit your object ball (a ball of your suit) and then some ball (any ball) must hit a rail or be pocketed.
As far as bar rules, those might vary from bar to bar, but I think he was probably making up rules as he went along, I hate it when they do that

Most of his stuff sounds made up, I just say OK and beat him anyways as I do enjoy beating the snot out of him
Watching him get soon excited when I scratch the 8 as if he made some grand run and won the game himself
Yes he claims this is a tpa rule, that he seen in a book from big tyme billiards before he got kicked out
I'm pretty sure he meant apa

But if he did indeed mean apa, well he's in for some changes he ain't gonna like,
Such as ball in hand on scratches, this of course is cheating to him, has to go to the kitchen by his word

Or anything he don't approve is a bulls hit game

I just keep it Kool and continually politely ask where are these rules my man, all the while losing 15 percent of the games, those loses include scratching the 8, or leaving it hanging on the pocket

He can have unbelievable accuracy on straight shots no matter how long, and straight banks
The rest of his game is no worth mention

Jump shots are not automatic fouls. The miscue in your link refers to 'scooping'.

It is a foul to jump a cue ball over another ball by purposely miscuing it up in the air. Accidental miscuing is not a foul unless other rules in this section are violated.

I ran into this situation before. Jump cues are not allowed, and some players make a broadbased assumption that jumping is not allowed.
If you want to jump a ball you must use your playing cue.

As for the 3 inch rule, sounds like your friend is confusing APA rules with 'house rules', which can vary from place to place. House rules are fine, as long as they're stated before hand, or posted up. Otherwise it comes across as making up the rules as you go. When I was in college, I learned to play pool in a frat house. One of the house rules was if the cue ball was frozen to the rail, the sorority girl would move it 1 ball away from the rail to shoot. We had that posted on the wall. :-) Regrettably because of that rule, I have a horrible rail bridge because I never had to practice a rail bridge shot :-(

This scooping then is how most bangers I've met attempt jumps

I agree, and have no issue with any rules, but if your gonna belly ache about them then you need to be clear on them upfront before we begin

The easy way to solve this and other questions is to get an APA rule book. Both the APA and BCA have pocket sized rule books you can refer to. Or go on-line.

I agree with this solution....

You have internet, print or pull up a set of rules on your smartphone (whichever rules the two of you can mutually agree on) and take if from there.

Given my choice, I'd pick BCA rules, which is basically open table after break until a called ball is made, call all balls & pockets, and B-I-H for all fouls that happen after break.

APA rules allow slop.

Sounds like he's confusing one of the many variations of bar rules, and then picking/choosing whatever else he thinks ill put you at a disadvantage. Typical banger behavior.

That's the thing, he won't specify before but if I do something
Woa boy
Like I said though I do enjoy making him my rack boy

in golf, if your drive doesn't travel past the lady's tee box, you have to prove your manhood.........
according to your banger friend, in pool, your shot has to be longer than his manhood....

;)

I wish I could take the mentality that I play with him in to the real pool hall and play that loose and confident, but I cannot

I KNOW when I **** up against them players, they run out
because you play so free, loose, accurate when you have that mental state of calmness

probably should have a shot or 2 before playing the better players

I agree and would choose the bca as well, but that open table after pocketing a ball, or ball in hand

well that's just cheetn

Play him 9 ball, I think that would be closer to a universal set of rules than bar 8 ball. Either that or print the APA or BCA rules and every time he quotes a rule hand him the book and ask him to show you or to stop making shit up.

No, that takes luck out of the game or puts more skill into the game. What ever way you want to look at it. but, don't act like your friend now, and start calling the "real" rules cheating... it's not.

tongue and cheek mean anything to you?

im all about a standard set of rules, and taking luck out, with more skill needed

Legal hit is cue ball touches object ball, then any ball hits a rail.

If these conditions are not met, ball in hand for your opponent.

Jumping is not a foul. Scooping is a foul.

Again, if the CB does not hit an OB, and then rails something in the process [in that order!], it is a foul.
