McDermott QR joint/pin question

Looking to replace this joint/pin collar. It is loose and the owner tried to remove it with vise grips.

What can I buy a joint/pin to replace it.
I believe it's a 3/8-16 thread?

What you have there Sir, is McDs version of a Uni-Loc. It's quite rare, or at least it was.
If a std Uni insert still fits the pin..or..a std Uni pin fits the shaft, you've got a shot.
Otherwise you'll have to acquire the prts from McD. They are not at all easy to work with.

The pin and jnt.collar are one pc. You now know that. The pin can be removed/replaced.
You've got options. Think it thru.

OK, the Uni and the McD prts are NOT interchangeable. They're of different pitch.
Big question ? Do you have the skills for a major jnt. conversion.
If not, YOUR problem is solved.

Don`t expect this to be an easy five minute job. As KJ said. that whole thing is the joint pin, and don`t expect McDermott to sell you spare parts. Since the collar is loose, I would take it off, check that threads are fine, hog off the pin from the collar, drill through the collar and install a different type of pin.

Kim laid-out a viable approach.
I'm sure a slight oversight/omission on Kim's part but change the pin and you'll need to change what's in the shaft also.
Putting a real pin in that cue would be the best thing that ever happened to it.
Once you have it apart you'll see why. Yes, it will be a pricey repair. Good Luck.
You might consider a pass. If you're unfamiliar, your nightmare awaits. I ain't kiddin.

Yes I assumed he understood that, and I totally agree that changing to a standard pin is the best thing you can do for that cue :)

Do yourself a favor. Call McDermott and send it to them. They will take good care of you. Very nice people there. Ask for Toni. The quick release by McDermott came in two models. 3/8x10 which I believe was discontinued and the now 3/8x16. Yours actually looks like the 3/8x10

You are correct yet again Sir, 3/8x10. Your post jogged my memory.
I have a partial pin and insert in the shop, just checked to confirm.
I believe that's the first full length brass insert for a 3/8x10 I've ever seen.
Actually, it's the one and only.

Novel idea, send it in. Make the call and let your client handle it from there.

You think mcdermott would still have these if they are discontinued

Well, if they do not have it, they can switch it to the 3/8x16. Both joints use the same i.d. thread to screw on the butt. They can also switch the insert in the shaft or shafts.

I'm pretty sure I posted both joints a long time ago. There somewhere in my photo bucket.
